Very good! Definitely very young for a big supertuscan so it benefited from a long decant but was very enjoyable!

#LaChiusa 2016. La Camperchi is a small winery making exceptional #superTuscan. Only small quantities are made and in the best years. It is bottled following a maturation of 12 months which sees, #Sangiovese in tonneau, #Merlot in barrique & steel for #PetitVerdot & #CabernetSauvignon. 🍷 #wine
Picture shows a bottle of La Chiusa 2016, a super Tuscan Italian blended wine. Stanley Tucci may or may not approve. Either way, I think it’s an excellent wine! 😉🍷

Marchesi Antinori Tenuta Guado al Tasso Cont'Ugo Bolgheri Rosso 2022, Tuscany, Italy It is time for some Merlot on this #MerlotThursday. Let's bring Merlot back! Dark ruby in color with a wide reddish rim. Red and black fruits on the nose with tobacco, light wood, licorice, chocolates, black pepper, herbs and spices. Full bodied and soft with medium plus acidity. Dry on the palate with cherries, red currants, sweet raspberries, coffee, sweet oak, chocolates, licorice, tobacco leaf, herbs, peppercorn, earth and mediterranean spices. Tangy finish with fine grained tannins and tangy raspberries. This 4 year old Super Tuscan Merlot is drinking very nicely now. Nicely balanced and elegant. Complex and entertaining. Needs a couple of hours to open up properly, and balance itself out. Still young, and needs a few years in the bottle to mature properly. Will continue to age nicely in the next 7 years. Wine Spectator 94 points. I had the 2021 vintage a couple of years ago at the winery, and it was much better. The 2022 vintage was not as good as the 2021, so there's that. Good by itself as a sipping wine, or with food. 100% Merlot grapes were aged in French oak barrels for 12 months. 14% alcohol by volume. 91 points. $65.

Fontodi's Flaccianello is a Supertuscan that defied the trend of international grape varieties to focus instead entirely on Sangiovese – and has proved itself super for four decades. Walter brings us up to date.

This 8 year old Sangiovese from Tuscany is drinking at its peak now. Medium plus in body with medium acidity. Dry on the palate with nice complexity. Showing red and black fruits with light wood, earth, herbs, spices, tobacco leaf, dark chocolates and peppercorn. Nicely balanced with a nice mouthfeel. Good right out of the bottle and better after an hour. I've had this vintage 5 years ago and it is drinking better now, and will continue to do so in the next few years. Paired nicely with Italian meatballs in red sauce. A blend of 90% Sangiovese with 10% Merlot. 14% alcohol by volume. 90 points.

Cantine Dei Sancta Catharina 2018, Tuscany, Italy Dark ruby in color with a short reddish rim. Medium plus in body with medium acidity. Dry on the palate with nice complexity and mouthfeel. Showing blackberries, plums, cooked cherries, oak, vanilla, licorice, spices, chocolates, tobacco, herbs, light earth, espresso and light cola. Long finish with fine grained tannins and tangy cherries. This is a delicious Bordeaux blend from Tuscany. Fruit forward and well balanced. Alcohol is nicely integrated. Needs time to open up properly, but delicious right out of the bottle. A delicious wine with so much potential. Will continue to age nicely in the next 10 years. Easy drinking and good by itself or with food. A blend of 30% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Sangiovese and 10% Petit Verdot. Aged for 24 months in French oak barrels. A small production of only 3,800 bottles made, this is bottle # 2,096. 14.5% alcohol by volume. 92 points. $70.

Tenuta di Renieri Grido Toscana IGT 2012, Tuscany, Italy It is time for some Merlot on this #MerlotThursday. Inky in color with a reddish rim. Beautiful nose of red and black fruits with cedar, licorice, chocolates, herbs, spices, tobacco leaf, dark coffee and black pepper. Full-bodied with medium plus acidity. Dry on the palate with cherries, currants, plums, licorice, light oak, dark coffee, peppercorn, earth, herbs and mediterranean spices. Tangy finish with fine grained tannins and tangy cranberries. This 14 year old Merlot from Tuscany is a bit past its prime, but still very drinkable. Showing nice complexity, but lacking balance. I've had this vintage 7 years ago, and it was drinking better. Wine Enthusiasts 89 points. Needed an hour to open up, and better with food. 100% Merlot grapes were aged in new oak barrels for 24 months. 14.5% alcohol by volume. 90 points. $40.

New: Campo alle Comete Bolgheri £31.40, this classic Bordeaux blend wowed Cat, declaring it the perfect Supertuscan for her Easter Lamb! Beautifully plummy character, with dashes of blackcurrant fruit and notes of chocolate. The finish has classic ripe Bolgheri tannins with a hint of tobacco smoke.

Petrolo Galatrona Val d'Arno di Sopra 2015, Tuscany, Italy It is time for some Merlot on this #MerlotThursday. Dark ruby in color with a short reddish/brick rim. Beautiful nose of black currants, cooked plums, light cedar, black tea, Mediterranean spices, dark chocolates, tobacco leaf, herbs, light earth, cola and black pepper. Medium plus in body with medium acidity. Dry on the palate with black currants, plums, cherries, oak, spices, chocolates, coffee, black pepper and black tea. Medium minus on the finish with round tannins and tangy raspberries. This is a very tasty Merlot from Tuscany. Rich, extracted and still showing lots of fruit notes. This 10 year old Merlot needs a few years in the bottle to mature properly, but drinking nicely now. Complex and nicely balanced. The nose is just gorgeous, but the palate doesn’t quite match its complexity. Needed 2 hours in the decanter to open up and show the beautiful nose. Robert Parker 96 points. Wine Spectator 95 points. This Super Tuscan is a little disappointing, as it received great reviews, but I had it blind, so it is what it is. Good as a sipping wine and better with food. 100% Merlot grapes were aged in (33% new) French Oak barrels for 18 months. 13.5% alcohol by volume. 91 points. $120.
