Charles Spencer has spent much of the past month defending his new memoir about Princess Diana. Now he has widened the argument beyond what King Charles allegedly said after Diana’s death or whether Prince William and Prince Harry should have walked behind their mother’s coffin. According to Spencer, the real issue is power. “The British royal family is extremely powerful,” he said during an interview with Entertainment Tonight. “They’re not just these people who put on fancy clothes for state occasions.” Spencer went further, arguing that the monarchy exercises significant influence over parts of the media and warning that anyone who publicly challenges it risks being destroyed.

Prince Harry continued a military-focused day in London on Oct. 1, arriving in a tuxedo at the United for Freedom Gala for Ukraine at the Imperial War Museum. The black-tie fundraiser brought together roughly 120 guests, with places reportedly costing £1,000 each. Proceeds are supporting Ukrainian charities, including the Superhumans Center, which provides surgery, rehabilitation and prosthetic limbs to people injured in the war. Superhumans says it has now provided more than 3,600 prostheses and carried out more than 2,900 surgeries for Ukrainians affected by the war. Getty Images captured Harry waving as he arrived at the museum, where he was billed as one of the evening’s major attractions.

Police are investigating two men who were seen apparently surveilling the British school attended by Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. According to ITV News, the men spent hours near the school in a white rental van. Sources described them as “scouting out” the premises and conducting reconnaissance. Police traced the rental and believe the driving licence belonged to an international photographer. So perhaps the British press can finally retire its habit of treating Prince Harry and Meghan Sussex’s security concerns like celebrity melodrama, because this was never theoretical.
