Am I wrong to think that, while batteries are a good short term patch to enable sustainables and get us off carbon, batteries at scale long term are also an environmental disaster, and we need fusion to work to actually do energy right?

Energy... I don't know. What I do know: sustainables have become dirt cheap, the problem is ramping up deployment. Which solves itself with time. And I do know that Google DCs are *very* power-efficient and others are likely getting there. So, scaling issues, but nothing *inherently* unsustainable.

Can we do it sustainably? I understand our need for sovereignty is dependent on opening up our trade options, but given our vulnerability to climate havoc, which is definitely occuring, we NEED A BALANCED approach. And a STOP to Smith's MORETORIUM on green energy. #Alberta #UCP #sustainables

Time to switch to renewables/sustainables, so big oil no longer has a stranglehold on our wallets and environment.
A lesson we should have learned in the 1970s with the "energy crisis"...

The only sense I can make of your reply is:
While we belatedly sprint to the nuclear gold medal, we use the silver and bronze (renewables/sustainables etc.) to keep catastrophe at bay just long enough. But…hey. We have to get off our collective ass and start DOING it.

I’ve been reading about new developments in sustainables abroad

Checked to be sure
But yep, we are being robbed of a better future

I recommend the TP company called Who Gives A Crap.
They're great. They use sustainables and fund toilets in the so called Third World.

Electric aircraft are a bit away, but I'd settle (pun not intended) for not selling oil downstairs to the drunk uncle. And reinvesting in sustainables for all the sectors that can use them.

Air travel as we know it will never be clean. Which is why we need more Zeppelins

Data centers we don't want over-using ressources to surveill and lie to us are still the corporate greed excuse while they cut our sustainables to jack up our costs and depoil our world while enshittifying our towns.

In fact Trump is driving sustainables at every level. At the same time he's "working" overtime to exclude the US from the necessity and economic good sense of sustainable energy and vehicles.
He's like an old fool in 1910 saying horse carriages are the future, investing in horseshoes and blacksmiths

I already have. Sold my pension funds that were investing in a criminal regime and increased investment in Woke Ehical and Sustainables with a contrasting investment in UK Defence companies. Dropping some now compromised USA technology service providers too.

Solar PV, geothermal hybrid systems are more than niche solutions
Security of supply is often raised as a concern in energy systems dominated by weather-dependent renewable energy sources, particularly solar energy. In this context, most scenarios have highlighted the value of PV-battery hybrid configurations. Researchers from LUT University propose a novel PV-geothermal hybrid solution, as geothermal power could benefits countries with excellent solar resources. This study moves beyond a niche technology perspective that has historically undervalued geothermal energy. This perspective is reinforced by recent research in geologically favorable regions such as Iceland, where abundant geothermal resource and in-situ mineralization potential position the country as a promising carbon dioxide removal hub. Against this backdrop, detailed research from LUT University estimates the global geothermal potential, which lifts geothermal energy as the third largest renewable energy resource as concluded by energy resource experts. As a firm renewable energy resource, geothermal energy could play a key role in accelerating the shares of renewables in the overall energy mix. In particular, enhanced geothermal systems (EGS) are estimated to offer around 4600 GWe globally at costs between €10-50 ($11.50-58.00)/MWh. The global potential of EGS amounts to a substantial contribution to meeting growing renewable energy demand and could be used beneficially in a fully renewable energy system...

Clean energy transition speeds up across nation
JINAN — In Tai'an, East China's Shandong province, a massive power facility has risen from a once-abandoned rock salt mine, reshaping the skyline of this once resource-dependent city. "The station is designed to store energy for eight hours and generate electricity for four hours, with an annual output of up to 460 million kilowatt-hours. That is enough to meet the yearly electricity demand of more than 200,000 households," said project manager Liu Shaoyong with the China Energy Engineering Group Co, the facility's operator. As the company's first commercial compressed air energy storage project, the station turns underground salt caverns left by years of mining into "energy reservoirs". During off-peak hours, electricity is used to compress air and store it underground. The compressed air is then released to generate power during peak demand. In recent years, China has made several breakthroughs in renewable energy generation. By 2025, renewable energy installations accounted for more than half of the country's total installed capacity, driven by the use of innovative technologies. This has provided strong momentum for both China and the world in their clean energy transition. In Tai'an, renewable energy technologies are not only accelerating the development of new power storage models but...

ABO Energy reaches international project milestones
In Canada, the company has sold project rights for a 63-MW wind energy project in the province of New Brunswick. In Spain, the developer has signed its first Owner’s Engineering contract for a third-party solar project. In Colombia, the company has received the final major payment for the sale of a 200-MW solar project.? With a projected capacity of 63 MW, the Canadian project will comprise up to 11 wind turbines. ABO Energy had developed the project from the ground up and partnered with Pabineau First Nation. The project name, Papoqji’jg (pronounced “pa-book-chich”), reflects this partnership: it originates from the traditional language of the Mi’kmaq First Nation and means a small, gentle, quiet pool on a river. ABO Energy secured a power purchase agreement (PPA) for the project in 2025 after a competitive procurement process. Investor, Eolectric, will oversee the construction of the wind farm and the sale of the green electricity to the provincially owned electric utility, NB Power. Commissioning is planned for the end of 2028. In Spain, ABO Energy has signed an owner’s engineering services contract with Spanish Power and Victory Hill Capital Partners for the Belorado I photovoltaic plant (64.86 MW peak), located in the province...

#EU Growth of #Sustainables
These top European firms are stepping up their sustainable growth
Over the past two decades, the European Union has positioned itself as a global leader in sustainability. From carbon-pricing mechanisms to corporate sustainability reporting legislation, the EU has championed ambitious sustainability-focused business policies that have been — until recently, anyway — poised to set global standards. But as its member states confront political headwinds at home, the EU has opted to dilute some sustainability efforts while putting others at risk. Some business leaders have supported the deregulation push and encouraged doubts over whether competitiveness and sustainability goals can co-exist. But other public companies have committed to their sustainable business efforts and found the answer: sustainability isn’t just a moral imperative, but a winning strategy. Now in its second year, Corporate Knights’ 2026 Europe 50 list identifies the big European publicly traded companies that are thriving and setting the tone for global sustainability efforts. In 2024, these companies collectively generated US$1.2 trillion in revenues, with sustainable products and services contributing an average of 56%. Of the companies that made the cut, 33 also made Corporate Knights’ 2026 Global 100 list. “From Danish wind turbines to Spanish renewables infrastructure and Turkish circular-economy appliances, the Europe 50 shows that sustainable business is not...

Yeah, every single thing about this "AI" hypecycle has been deeply terrible for the environment. If this gets it on the path to not just sustainables but even renewables, then I'll take it. I just REALLY think they should have chosen a different plant to start their push 😬
