The Taittiriya Upanishad of the Yajurveda, composed in the 6th C. BCE, preaches the importance of Svadhyaya (स्वाध्याय, literally "self-investigation" or introspection) as an essential spiritual practice.

In yoga, Svadhyaya is the word for self study. The Devil card reminds me of Svadhyaya. Without deeply studying ourself & familiarizing ourselves with the workings of our being, we will overlook. we will repeat cycles. we will repeat bad habits. we will react rather than observe.

This past week has reminded me how important my yoga practice is. Diving into self study (Svadhyaya) by rereading these two gems. They are perfect guides for uncertain times. 🙏

In yoga, we call it Svadhyaya. It translates to Self Study. And this new guided meditation I created invites you to go inward and get curious with who you are. I’m so excited to be bringing meditation to a broader audience! 💋

Yoga is about challenging yourself to be aware of options beyond (tapas), investigating + ethically ordering them (svādhyāya), so as to choose free of the past (Īśvara praņidhāna).

so ignore Plato and Socrates and set aside Confucius, and his journey to becoming a Junzi (an "exemplary person") the Hindu philosophers as Svadhyaya, Boethius "The Consolation of Philosophy", where "lady Philosophy" leads the reader on a journey of introspection. What an ignorant pillock.

Journaling honestly is an incredible tool of svadhyaya (self study). But it must be honest and not written for an audience. This ruined my journaling for years. Much time spent imagining how I’d look if others read it. Giving that up has made all the difference.

Nothing quite like microdosing/edibles, curling up in bed, and having a journaling session. #svādhyāya #psychedelics

Adivinhem qual tá ganhando?

Eu não consigo assistir a aula de Svadhyaya nem por 15 minutos

Yoga Sutra 2.1 gives a practical formula: tapas, svadhyaya, Ishvara pranidhana. Effort, self-study, and surrender. Modern life often overbuilds effort; the sutra balances discipline with reflection and devotion in one path.

2/🧘‍♂️ In yoga, we practice non-attachment (aparigraha), presence (dharana), and self-study (svadhyaya).
💜 In polyamory, we navigate jealousy, communicate our needs, and cultivate trust.

Svadhyaya = self-study. One of the niyamas from the Yoga Sutras. I’m not religious. There’s trauma from my childhood. But I feel I am a spiritual person. And this has grown since becoming a yoga teacher. So, here are two books I’m currently reading. Hopefully, they help me be a better human. 💙📚

Saucha (purity/cleanliness)
Santosha (contentment)
Tapas (austerity or disciplined effort)

Read the following and feel if any of these disciplines call to you at this time

Saucha (purity)
santosa (contentment, equanimity)

Svadhyaya = self-study, or self-governance
In order to honor oneself means to understand how you are arriving in the moment. Then, you can decide how to move forward in the way that honors you best.

Ever wonder what Patañjali's Yoga Sūtra actually says, beyond the interpretations? Dr. Shyam's translation lets the text speak for itself: Yoga as devotion to what's right (Īśvara), practiced through tapas and svādhyāya, affirming your own agency. Get it: yogaphilosophy.com

Modern journaling records thoughts. Svadhyaya adds a sacred mirror: study wisdom, observe the self, and notice where conduct resists understanding. The page is not only for expression; it can become a place where identity is examined and refined.

This month's Streaming talk applies Yoga's ethics of Sovereignty to the cost of living crisis — what's genuinely in your control, and what tapas and svādhyāya look like when the constraint is structural, not a bad habit. Sign up to catch it live. More at yogaphilosophy.com
