DESY in Hamburg.

A database designed by a CLS scientist is making it easy for researchers working in materials science, biology, chemistry, and environmental science to store, share, and use X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) data generated by synchrotrons. Full story: https://bit.ly/484Cg7e

Quick observation: minimum $50k for 'Explore' grants is still a problem for HASS, given limits on teaching buyout imposed at both ARC and institution ends. We don't need synchrotrons, we just need time to write!

Hey it's pretty cool that the wikipedia page for synchrotrons has a pic of our little Australian one back when it was practically empty en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synchro...

With synchrotrons you can promote synergies

China now has five synchrotrons and is upgrading them. I guess poor countries can't afford science.
The existential choice facing UK physics facilities: commercialize or close
The national synchrotron source, a laser facility and a particle accelerator are under threat of closure unless cash is found.

Thrilled to share our work is on the cover of Science Advances!

From finding the fossil with my father in 2021 to countless hours across synchrotrons worldwide. Huge thanks to

Now I’m gonna spend the next few days downloading the 1.3 TB of raw data collected and processed in a span of - get this - *less than 8 hours*! What?!! 😆 Can’t get used to synchrotrons being just way too cool! 🤩
I’ve just spent a few days in Barcelona and the ALBA #synchrotron, where I’ve been imaging, studying and admiring complex structures of many sorts. I haven’t been this excited about a project in a very very long time! 🤩 🧠 🪰🔬🧪 #neuroskyence

Thanks to rotating anode advances, home labs now rival synchrotrons. As Simon Coles says, if diffraction fails in Southampton, it likely won't show at Diamond either. Full interview link in comments.

Diamond (pictured) and SOLEIL are UK/France's national synchrotrons: they accelerate charged particles close to the speed of light, and scientists can use this very bright beam of light as a massive super-microscope to image everything from proteins to historical artifacts.

You say you don't need synchrotrons, but hand on heart can you say you've never wanted to put Peter Singer in one to see what happens?

(That previous image is Sandia's Z-pinch, not ZEUS).

Anyway this is hands down the WEIRDEST scientific user facility I’ve ever visited. And guys, I’ve been to a lot of accelerators, reactors, linacs, and synchrotrons during my career. Really unusual experiments with really unusual jobs.

That’s just preparing him for later life, the amount of non-internet computers I’ve seen at synchrotrons because they don’t want to update a software licence is hilarious

G’day #Calgary — your turn after #Melbourne 2023! 🤠

Still flying the #IUCr2023 Melbourne colours, now with a Calgary white-hat upgrade. On my way to @iucr2026.bsky.social!

Whether the hat actually makes it onto the plane… we’ll see. 😄

Short thread 🧵in which @beamsandbows.bsky.social celebrates the seven-binary-candles birthday of a classic accelerator.

Alternating gradient synchrotrons, descendants of *the* Alternating Gradient Synchrotron, put food on my table for many years, so I love them.
The Alternating Gradient Synchrotron at Brookhaven Lab had first beam on this day 64 years ago! Built with a (F/2)O(F/2)(D/2)O(D/2) focusing lattice, it was designed as a proof of concept for alternating gradient beam focusing in particle accelerators. 🧪
