all syntaxes must be standardised to guard against deviance 🫠

TypeScript offers two syntaxes for declaring namespaces.

module ns {...} // deprecated
namespace ns {...} // modern

TypeScript 6.0 will only support the second form.
TypeScript 6.0: use the namespace keyword instead of module (when appropriate)

🔫 we are no longer asking

pauldb. Document-oriented with a bunch of graph features. Has 13 different query syntaxes and is sold as both "batteries included" and "simple." Throws away data that you didn't really want anyway.

A corrective to this perspective is in Edgar Dijkstra's essay, On the foolishness of "natural language programming".

www.cs.utexas.edu/~EWD/transcr...

He points out that reducing the human labour at work in remembering formal language syntaxes creates other work elsewhere in many places.

for loop syntaxes that force me to have a mutable counter variable are so gross that every time I see one I try to rewrite it in a pure functional style

I'm excited to share that my paper, Teaching Modeling in Introductory Statistics: A Comparison of Formula and Tidyverse Syntaxes, is finally published! doi.org/10.1080/2693... (HTML version leaves a bit to be desired, read the PDF) #rstats #tidyverse #datascience #pedagogy
Teaching Modeling in Introductory Statistics: A Comparison of Formula and Tidyverse Syntaxes
When incorporating programming into a statistics course, there are many pedagogical considerations. In R, one consideration is the particular R syntax used. This article reports on a head-to-head c...

many "niche" multiplayer genres do not actually have an onboarding problem, they have a culture problem, as in gamer culture is so built around being the best that gamers lose their shit if they're not immediately good at games they have very little experience with the syntaxes of

Early morning sql jam session on the heating pad.

Code cat is checking your syntaxes and judging you.

Would anyone be interested in a tool that collect ecmascript feature statistics from files published on npm or your organization?

Kind of like chromestatus.com/features but for ecmascript syntaxes, also kind of like github.com/rust-lang/cr...

yea i mean like,,, there aren't *that* many fundamental constructs. just better surface syntaxes for representing complicated choreographies thereof.

metaprogramming and custom syntaxes are sadly a very bad idea in collaborative environments

What are you using and what syntaxes is it getting wrong? In a few thousand lines of Python, PHP and SQL code that Claude has produced I can’t remember any syntax errors

> While we’ve done extensive work to handle many patterns, there are cases and framework-specific syntaxes that may not yet be fully supported (for example Svelte control-flow syntax, or Astro JSX-like syntax).

Sooo... Not full support then 😅

gonna have the official account do a separate post about them later in the week

also need to get UI tools in there for folks who struggle with syntaxes!

another thing that really sucks about markdown in this usecase is that it’s not extensible. everybody starts inventing their own syntaxes, and then lack of shared support leads to clients showing the syntax to users

The worst thing about being a linguist is paying your syntaxes

oh, you mean like the f"" and f{} syntaxes? basically nobody ever uses those tho

New version deployed!
- The syntaxes "!RemindMe" and "RemindMe!" work the same (but keep the capitalization)
- Tell me I'm a good/bad bot, and I'll respond!
- Code refactoring and error handling

My todo list for future updates will be in the replies :)

Have fun! And be reminded!
Reminder bot is here!
Want to be reminded of a skeet in a few weeks, but don't want to have to scroll to find it? Use RemindMe!

Reply with this format
"RemindMe! # years, # months, # weeks, # days, # hours, # minutes"
To any skeet, and remind bit will remind you after that time has passed!

bitter lesson of software metas is that things with “looseness”

- separation of concerns
- alternate syntaxes
- dynamic typing
- XML
- NoSQL

usually lost to things that provided more firm and coupled experiences
Another advantage is that JSON mixes representation and semantics. This is listed by the OP as a bad thing (no alternate syntax), but it comes with the advantage of embedding a simple type system in JSON. XML's is entirely string-typed unless you provide an XML schema

Swift has a lot of different syntaxes that are not necessarily used on a daily basis and can be difficult to remember. There are a great series of websites that summarize many of these Swift nuances, as well as date formatting and and FormatStyle.

Feels like a good time to re-share my paper comparing teaching #rstats formula and #tidyverse syntaxes. (Not quite a base/tidyverse comparison, I couldn't bring myself to do that. But if YOU feel passionately about it, why don't you run that experiment?) Again, PDF format is the one to look at.

league of legends is actually less complicated than deadlock and is more accessible but deadlock adds syntaxes to the moba formula that shooter players and especially hero shooter players are more familiar with
