This is Mata Mua (In Olden Times), an 1892 oil painting by Paul Gauguin, created during his first stay in Tahiti. It is part of the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza collection in Madrid.
Mata Mua is a nostalgic tribute to the traditional Tahitian lifestyle lost to European colonialism. It features a large tree trunk dividing the canvas, with worshipers dancing around a statue of Hina on the left and two women resting, one playing a flute, in the right foreground. The style employs Cloisonnism and Synthetism, with flat, vibrant colors outlined in dark.

Edouard Vuillard (1868-1940) :
Octagonal Self-Portrait, 1890

Oil on canvas

Profile of a man screams inside the artist's head, his neck possibly throttled by an orange hand.

The creation of art is a mental struggle, often violent as suggested in this cry of psychic pain.

More in the alt text 👇
Vuillard painted his face that is broken into large, abstract expanses of pale pink, orange, brown, and cream - an example of synthetism - the idea that art should synthesize external appearances with the artist’s subjective feelings, through purely aesthetic considerations of line, form, and color.

Landscape from Bretagne

In the 1880s, Paul Gauguin occasionally went to Bretagne, where he was taken by the landscape and local traditions. This painting shows an actual part of the coast, in a subjective interpretation where the decorative effects of colour fields and contours are the key element. The orange sections have shadows in a contrasting blue. This new style was called Synthetism. In autumn 1892, the artist Richard Bergh bought Landscape from Bretagne from Gauguin’s wife. This painting inspired many Swedish artists.

Femmes à la source (Women at the Spring), also known as The Danaides, is a 1898 tempera painting by French Post-Impressionist Paul Sérusier, housed at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
Sérusier pioneered the avant-garde Les Nabis movement and Synthetism. This piece embodies the group's philosophy with flattened forms, simplified silhouettes, and decorative line work. It references the Greek myth of the Danaides, condemned to fetch water in leaking vessels, transposed into a Breton landscape. The vertical composition, vivid color blocks, and winding path show Sérusier's fascination with Japanese ukiyo-e prints.

Red Hat by Paul Gauguin, 1886, Musée d'Orsay (Paris, France)

#ArtHistory #ModernArt #PostImpressionism #Synthetism
The surface texture of the dominant red form commands immediate attention. A monumental, crimson-hued pot anchors the foreground, spilling its dark, cavernous interior into the viewer's space. Three dark apples cluster near its base, resting against a pale tablecloth. A folded, straw-like object occupies the left background, partially obscured. Short, agitated strokes build the pot's undulating surface, generating an internal vibration. These rapid marks imbue the earthen vessel with an almost living energy. The flattened, angular planes defining the background suggest a stylized enclosure rather than a rendered environment. This rendering of form, stripped of illusionistic depth, aligns with Post-Impressionist explorations of subjective experience. The stark juxtapositions of saturated red against muted background tones communicate a primal intensity. Broad applications of light and shadow carve out the pot's volumetric presence. These visual strategies prioritize emotional resonance over representational accuracy, characteristic of a period seeking a new artistic language. The composition challenges simple reading of domestic tranquility. Painted during Gauguin's first trip to Tahiti, "Red Hat" is a key example of Post-Impressionism and, specifically, Synthetism. This movement rejected the Impressionists' focus on capturing fleeting moments of light and instead emphasized subjective vision and symbolic meaning. Gauguin's work in Tahiti was a deliberate attempt to escape European civilization and find a more "primitive" and authentic way of life and art, influencing subsequent movements like Primitivism and Expressionism.

Actually have no recollection of drawing this. But most amazed at my prediction of what looks like Crocs Shoes. 😂

A pale woman with dark hair and blue eyes looks toward the camera with a somber expression. She wears an intricate, jagged silver crown resembling frozen branches with a diamond-shaped jewel hanging over her forehead. Her attire includes a high-collared garment with a thick black fur trim and long, crystal-like earrings. The lighting is cool and monochromatic, dominated by deep blues and shadows, highlighting the side of her face and the texture of her hair. The overall mood is cold, regal, and melancholic.

Painting by Paul Sérusier, Incantation or The Holy Wood. Three women, barefoot, make an offering at what appears to be a natural altar of a mossy rock, before which one woman kneels, having lit a candle. Two women carry bowls of some sort of offering. The trees are painted red above a green forest floor.
