Once again, I am reminding you all that the first rule of ARIA is DON'T USE ARIA.

This time brought to you by me removing a tablist role on a div. It is an accordion, you can have them all open at once, thus it isn't a tablist.

You just can't sprinkle ARIA anywhere in the HTML, it has meaning!

A tabbed interface requires JS—full stop—so you should never use the tab, tablist, tabpanel roles in your non-JS markup.

Also, you gotta present it differently which probably will cause CLS, unless you load the enhancement in a render blocking way.

is simplified to "not to use aria". We can't really expect that to work out if we have a bunch of aria roles with no html solution. Obviously we might disagree here but I think we really should be adding toolbar, menu and menubar, tablist and any others we might be missing.

which site i use is dependent mostly on which one is at top of my tablist

Tabs are one of the web's most-failed widgets. Divs with click handlers aren't a tablist to a screen reader. ARIA pattern: role=tablist/tab/tabpanel, roving tabindex (arrows move, not Tab), aria-selected, focus to the panel. Get it right → "tab 2 of 4, selected." #a11y #Angular

What is everyone's preffered menu style?
I'm going with a start button that goes to a tablist that has sub menus.

I thought the tablist-role one was covered by one of those, but could be wrong — I'm not an expert in all this (sadly).

But rest assured: this is all being (re)evaluated and looked into, and your post is part of the input on all this.

I have been working on my #maven package for #emacs. It uses transient (thanks @tarsius ) and tablist-mode to create a neat interface. It is still a bit rough around the edges, with the occasional nil reference that I need to track down, but it handles […]

Let's talk Turbo frames, tabs and accessibility. Tabs require: a `tablist` orle, with many tabs using the `tab` role. Each tab is connected to its content via a `tabpanel` role.

How would you design that using Turbo frames? 3 tabpanels each with its own turbo frame? Seems a bit redundant...

The classic tab pattern:

- Row of buttons
- Click to show/hide panels
- ARIA roles (tablist, tab, tabpanel)
- Arrow key navigation
- Roving tabindex

That’s a lot to show one section at a time and let users switch.

Yup, menu(list) and menubar are being worked on too. So I think with those 3 it's just tablist left to go! But they all have varying levels of complexity beyond just what focusgroup provides (admittedly toolbar itself is quite simple).

I learned a lot from @matuzo’s talk at #id24

- Popovers are cool and manage focus for you
- Title elements inside of inline SVGs are problematic with VoiceOver
- The focusgroup attribute turns a list of interactive elements into a tablist

Don't know how to turn it off, but the jump is so that your currently open tab is in the middle(?) of the list (or at least in the shown tabs of the list). If you have the very first/left tab open and then click the tablist, it should not jump.
