Annie Oakley demonstrates her skills in the cramped Edison Black Maria studio, a tarpaper shack that served as a location for most of the company's early releases.

Movies were a novelty-verging-into-a-craze when this film was released in 1894 and Oakley was one of many celebrities engaged by Edison

“Houses from the 20s were so much better built.”

The tarpaper shacks and tumbledown tenements were knocked down and replaced decades ago. Poor quality manufactures have always been with us.

from what I can tell the roofing market is a bunch of semi-sketchy cheapo shops doing fast and quick tarpaper-shingle jobs, the scammers, and then the custom builders who will do it right but are backlogged 2 years out and charge 10 times as much

Edison's original studio was a tarpaper shed in New Jersey nicknamed the Black Maria (slang for a police van aka paddy wagon).

Early films shot there had a plain black background but the company later added decorative backdrops.

"Pansy" has been used as a slur for queer or gender-nonconforming men. FINE! Pansies are resilient, defiant, beautiful, unstoppable. I'm planting some tomorrow. "It’s always unwise to underestimate a pansy." provincetownindependent.org/farm-garden/...
The Resilience of Pansies - The Provincetown Independent
I never used to pay much attention to pansies. When I first started gardening on the desolate expanse of a New York City tarpaper rooftop, I would plant only the […]

(In case I ever forget that my neighbor’s roof is made from 70+ year old tarpaper sheets, every time there’s a big storm I get various forms of evidence of that all over my gangway).

Also, early peepshow films were just a few seconds long and shot in a tarpaper shack. $20 admission for blockbusters isn’t out of range today but this was for, essentially, ten YouTube shorts. Peepshows were a license to print money. Heck they’re profitable today at $0.25 a pop.

My ancestors & extended family lived in Swede Hollow in impermanent tarpaper shacks. They would be "homeless" by modern standards. I see my own family history reflected in the unhoused neighbors of Saint Paul. These are my people, much more than the Summit Avenue gentry.

ANNABELL'S SERPENTINE DANCE was one of Edison's big hits and it remained an iconic symbol of the first age of movies but you can see that space was limited in the tarpaper studio nicknamed the Black Maria (slang for a police van)

Keep in mind, at the time, top US film studio Edison was shooting in a tarpaper shack and faking their own Cuban war footage in a New Jersey park. Lubin wasn’t a purveyor of schlock, he was trying to crash into the film industry at a time when an optometrist with a nice backyard realistically could

While the kitchen floor in the upstairs apartment needs a lot of TLC after being covered in newspaper, tarpaper, and multiple layers of Lino/peel&stick since the mid 50’s, it seems to have never been refinished before!

My dad was 17, and they took him out of Kitsilano High School and sent him into the mountains to help build tarpaper shacks for the families who'd be arriving soon later.
Weird thought -- he probably based our garden shed design on what he learned there.

I chat with people who think they’re so far removed from what’s going on today with ICE and I always hit them with the “my grandma was 6 when they put her in an incarceration camp.”
#OTD in 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, which cleared the way for the U.S. to incarcerate Japanese Americans in internment camps for the duration of World War II — and set a dangerous precedent for the future. #TheMarchContinues

Like many other celebrities of the time, Annabelle had posed for Edison in the Black Maria, a small tarpaper shack that served as a studio. The cramped space clearly limited her kicks and twirls but she did her best. She also performed her version of a Butterfly Dance.
