I don’t know how one reads TCITR and concludes Salinger is endorsing Caulfield’s behaviors. Like, all of his acting out ends up hurting him almost immediately.

I came here to make sure the requisite TCITR jokes were made. Y’all did not let me down!

I disliked TCITR intensely when I read it as a teenager. Reading Salinger's later work, later in life, was a huge revelation to me that I had totally misinterpreted the book. It happens! Even to me!

Anybody identifying with the characters in TCITR should turn themselves in to the police.

and people did not like it, and felt it undermined the message of the original book

since IIRC the message of TCITR is angsty adolescent self absorption/ self pity a contradiction is probably less likely

Wondering if Philly has stronger proclivities towards TCITR based on regional train line cameos.

Holden and Sinclair are two sides of the same coin really. I think both novels are great but I dislike the way some people undermine tCitR because Holden is "annoying", it's a beautifully written novel and an insanely interesting and complex story about growing up. It's as good as Demian to me.

For instance, just talking about Salinger, it was only when I re-read TCITR in my 50s that I considered Holden’s mother and his late brother Allie — it became a whole new book…

"The Catcher in the Rye" was published on this day in 1951. The disaffected main character Holden Caulfield is a lot like the book’s author, J.D. Salinger. Most TCITR readers empathize with Caulfield or find him a privileged brat. Sales top 65 million copies. About a million more sell every year.

I think like 80% of movies starring Michael Cera are Ryelikes now that I'm looking into it, and now I'm mad we didn't get a live action version of TCITR starring Michael Cera

I lost 3 friends in an accident the summer before my freshman year

When I had to read TCitR and my teacher played on the idea that we could relate as young people I felt super stabby

I'm not sure that's a good one to have land in one's brain. 😬 Meanwhile: Why did this kill me? (I suppose it reminds me of my favorite lines from TCITR: "He wrote this terrific book of short stories, The Secret Goldfish, in case you never heard of him. The best one in it was
'The Secret Goldfish.'")

Been *very* close to two people experiencing psychotic breakdowns. TCITR saddens and scares the s*** out of me.

Salinger’s been on my list since I was about 14. I found TCITR at boarding school, labeled as “bad for young minds” since the moral panic linking it to Lennon. It won’t surprise you to hear I thought I was surrounded by phonies.

I wonder if boarding school sharpened that connection for you too?

If TCITR mentality is the reason my AP Bio homework is being procrastinated upon I'm going to be so mad

Going to a costume-ish party this weekend as him so maybe I'll get to post pictures b/c I know my slow ahh didn't this Halloween 😭

Is it a coincidence that we are currently tackling ages 17-19 in EMDR and I felt compelled to re-read tCitR? Probably not.
