He’s bigly mad at Harvard

Been teaching myself Unreal and built this moody office scene while learning the basics of lighting, VFX, camera control, animation, cinematics, and blueprints. Wanted to make it feel convincingly cluttered and lived-in, which involved placing 600+ props by hand. Sound up for maximum atmosphere.

Teaching a class on the sociology of teaching and learning for the first time today. It sounds wild, but teaching might actually give me hope amid some of the doom and existential dread I'm feeling around me.

You know what I mean?

I hate to say it, but the colleagues positioning themselves to be pro AI in teaching and curriculum, are probably also positioning themselves to be administrators, and probably aren’t thinking about or don’t care how it will affect teaching, learning, or the careers of those around them.

Use teaching and learning experts to observe and assess your teaching.

It is EXHAUSTING not only being made responsible for coming up with new kinds of assignments for our students; it's also tedious reading op-eds that suggest the core problem is a crisis in teaching. But, as Chris and I lay out here, this isn't a crisis in teaching; it's an attack on learning.

Doing a PhD is not simply generating data. It’s learning how to be a scientist. It’s teaching and science communication, and writing, and presenting and FUCKING THINKING.

Harvard redid its whole homepage to push back against the administration’s demands. I mean, this is just a website but I think it’s kind of a great PR move: www.harvard.edu

Harvard University is devoted to excellence in teaching, learning, and research, and to developing leaders who make a difference globally.

I think we’re on the cusp of mass attempts to automate teaching, and I also think it is going to be a massive wasteful failure in ways that will make the “learning loss” of the pandemic look like a speed bump next to a mountain.

I'm teaching my niece how to drive and I'm here to report that the passenger side brakes work just as well now as they did when we were learning.

There's a reason many teaching and learning centers on college and university campuses (including mine) refuse to support these tools and/or their use by faculty.

I think Harvard's plan to respond to the every-decade moral panic about grade inflation by capping A's is pedagogically obscene.

Grades should be a measure of learning, not competition.

Grade caps engender competition and anxiety where we should be teaching collaboration and a love of learning.

You’re not teaching a machine, there’s no learning happening here. You’re populating a database with stolen data and then using it as the basis for an algorithm. Let’s be adults here.

Just like writing is thinking and teaching is learning, I find that I often build little spreadsheet models of the world in service of improving my own understanding.

When I taught school, I felt if a kid was not learning, I needed to find a different way of teaching them. Kept me creative and earned me the pleasure of seeing kids succeed when before they failed.

I was bored and thought I'd start learning Mandarin for fun. Glad they're teaching the useful phrases

I hate that teaching has become policing and surveilling. I hate that learning has become evasion and shortcuts. I hate how AI papers say nothing at all; they have no capacity for originality, contribution, or social change.

In this commentary, I argue that student-based teaching evaluations are problematic bc

✳️ systematic biases (e.g., racism, sexism)
✳️ poor construct validity
✳️ undermine standards and learning

We should evaluate teaching as seriously as we do research. Or don't do teaching evaluations.
It is time to abandon student evaluations of teaching

Trump says he is "teaching Canada a lesson"
He's right.
Canada is learning never to trust America.
Canada is learning to take it's business to Asia and Europe.

The question is: What lesson is Trump learning?

Will create an atmosphere of fear and intimidation that is hostile to teaching and learning - one student can start a massive state or national controversy at any time with an out-of-context phone video, etc.
The Snitch State

This is the nightmare of many faculty at public institutions in GOP-controlled states… being ratted out by students to hostile administrators.

The Department of Justice has also acknowledged the situation and said it would be investigating.

But John and Julie (Complexly's CEO) and the rest of the leadership team and I hit this thing from every angle and, look, our goal isn't any of those things. Our goal is to get people curious and help them learn...to make learning and teaching easier by making videos PEOPLE CHOOSE TO USE!

People on the left who love books and reading and writing and teaching and learning need to push it. Right now, too much is right wing classical education vs neoliberal ROI education.
I'm late to this, but @annieabrams.bsky.social recently wrote a great piece on the stakes involved in reading and teaching literature, and it's essential reading for understanding what the "classical education" and charter-school "great books" people are actually trying to do.
This Year, We All Realized That Kids Aren’t Reading Books in School. Only the Right Is Offering a Solution.
Common Core and the College Board are my enemies. But the classical education movement is not my friend.

Historian here this is exactly the Nazi playbook politicize and control the teaching of history and destroy academic freedom and institutions of higher learning.
You can't teach U.S. history without "divisive" narratives. Slavery wasn't "unifying." The Japanese incarceration wasn't "unifying." The anti-immigrant Operation Wetback (real name) wasn't "unifying."
It's history's job to tell the truth, not cover up past racism to pave the way for future racism.
