On this day in 1866, the battle of Lissa is fought between the Austrian and Italian Fleets. Outgunned by the Italians, Admiral Wilhelm von Tegetthoff resorts to ramming tactics, sinking an Italian ironclad, the Re d' Italia. Having lost two ships, the Italians withdraw.

The water in the Adriatic is usually in the seventies Fareheit in June (about 23°C), so swimming wouldn't be too much of a problem. And the rest of the fleet was nearby.

On June 10, 1918 the Austro-Hungarian dreadnought Szent Istvan was sunk by two 18" torpedoes fired by the Italian MAS-15 during an attempted raid on the Otranto Barrage.
Her sinking was filmed from the dreadnought Tegetthoff.

Austria lost none and suffered only about 176 casualties. Tegetthoff became a hero, while Persano was disgraced. The battle highlighted ramming tactics but had little strategic effect, as Prussia’s land successes secured Venice for Italy anyway.
