My first recording of a young vampire zombie ant chomping into a mature ant ophiocordyceps zombie teleomorph.

#Gibellula #Teleomorph has quite the stare. Today is a good day to appreciate your antifungal skin oils :) #Entomopathogenic #Zombie #Fungifriends

Trichoderma viride is the asexually reproducing form (anamorph) of the sexually reproducing Hypocrea rufa (teleomorph). In the teleomorph stage, it produced brown blob-shaped fruiting bodies, as opposed to the hairy green texture shown here.

It sometimes also grows on other fungi.

One of my favourite #zombie #fungi photos :) The host is a tiny spider and the fungi is a #Gibellula #entomopathogenic species. These fungi usually have both #teleomorph (sexual state) and #anamorph (asexual state) forms and can look very different indeed. This is a teleomorph aka Torrubiella.

If you don't have a dry spring (like we had here this year) you can find its teleomorph. I got these in May 2023.

This first #Gibellula is an #anamorph. While the second Gibellula is a #teleomorph. I dont think they are the same species, but I did find them both in the same area yesterday. Both have consumed spider hosts. #Fungifriends

OPERATION *NO REST FOR THE DEAD* #Zombie Hunter hot jungle tips :) Dont forget to check #Cordyline style plants for #cordyceps style fungi! This little #teleomorph #Gibellula #entomopathogenic #fungi monstering a spider was loving the microclimate they provide.

I had 5 minutes to find a token zombie before suiting up. I didnt even need 1. And it was a stonker too :D nice huntsman spider host, monstered by #Purpureocillium atypicola. This is the Anamorph. The Teleomorph is a cool brown spike, that usually targets our primitive spiders in their holes.

Purpureocillium atypicola victims go from fluffy white, to plump powdery purplish, & then decay to leave an abandoned dirty spider shell. At least in the Anamorph form. Heres a "chest burster" sample, spot the empty scuttle fly pupae case inside :) The Teleomorph looks and hunts much differently.

Sporophagomyces chrysostomus (young developing anamorph) on Ganoderma applanatum. The fungus is usually found stuck to the bottom side of Ganoderma consuming its spores, here it started to grow on spore covered top side. Will I finaly find it's teleomorph this year?

The amount of spores #Purpureocillium #anamorphs produce is just insane! This one is on their locally preferred huntsman spider host. Usually found on tree trunks or cliff faces, sometimes on rushes or ferns. The sexual teleomorph state targets spiders in ground burrows like trapdoors.

A tiny gib. This time in #teleomorph :) To be honest I have no idea how many different gibellula species there are here, with all their different shapes, colours and forms, it feels like a lot some days.

#Teleomorph on the other hand is described as the sexual reproductive stage. Both stages can have their own deceptively complex life cycles. Often involving secret hidden lives under ground, while their surface lovers hijack mobile animals to spread their babies across the land :)

It's a Hypocrea anamorph. Hypocrea rufa should be a teleomorph of Tricholoma viride but there are multiple Hypocrea species that look like Hypocrea rufa and even lots of differently looking Hypocrea species have the "green mold" looking anamorph.

Back to topic, Phomopsis species (teleomorph Diaporthe) are classified within the non-Clavicipitaceous/non-Balansiaceous group (NC-group) of fungal endophytes.

Looking forward to the name given if they find its teleomorph

Lulz, I was hoping to make a connection between the Animorphs book series (this meme) and the old system where Candida had two names - anamorph and teleomorph name.

How awfully interesting! Cant believe I am adding "sick lichens" to my wish list of photography subjects right below purpureocillium atypicola teleomorph. So many great posts, this is rad
