Look, big fancy telescopes are great. Some of my best friends are big fancy telescopes. But DASCH, the historic plate archive, continues to be the hottest shit out there.

Re-upping this thread for #Australia and #NZ folks who partake in #astrophotograpy and have clear skies.

Clear skies? Turn your telescopes to nearby (relatively speaking) galaxy NGC 1433 --> mostly visible to southern hemisphere observers.

There's a fresh new supernova!

Thread has more details 👇
Southern Hemisphere Astrophotographers!

⭐💥NEW SUPERNOVA ALERT ⭐💥

It's in a bright, nearby barred spiral galaxy (NGC 1433), which is very favourable for imaging this time of year.

Type 1a, so image over weeks + get light curves!

Yes. Large telescopes usually rely on AltAz mounts, as equatorial ones become impractical above a certain size.

M65 is a spiral galaxy located about 35 Mly away in the constellation of Leo.

The two images show the importance of guiding during imaging. Though telescopes track objects in the night sky, often their tracking is imperfect. Guiding helps correct this. #astronomy

@NASAHubble The small, select area both telescopes observed is nicknamed the Cat’s Head Nebula because of its resemblance to a cat sitting with its back toward the viewer. The “head” of the cat is turned to the right, revealing a glowing eye.

Perhaps you looked into this—a lot of space telescopes seem to fail because of either mechanical issues (e.g. gyroscopes) or running out of fuel.

And many space telescopes seem to work much longer than initially planned.

Is the planning wrong? Should there be more spares and fuel on them?
