#temizuya
Small version as it's from 2009, when I wasn't putting big photos online. But, a moment at Meiji Jingu shrine, photographing the temizuya (the place you wash your hands before entering the shrine). And a tiny blue moth landed on one of the handles of the okiome (the ladles you use for the water).

A temizuya (or chōzuya), a Shinto and Buddhist water purification pavilion found at the entrance of shrines and temples in Japan, for a ritual cleansing called temizu or misogi, to purify their body and mind before approaching the sacred grounds and deities (kami).

Wonderful Japan, where the traditional and slightly mystical coexist effortlessly with the ultra‑modern.
A temizuya, purification pavilion, at a Shinto shrine in Kyoto.
And of course, modern vending machines right beside it.
Soon going back.....

In the past she was worshipped as a goddess of good fortune alongside Benzaiten & Daikokuten, the three deities being known as Santen. Eventually Benzaiten became so popular that Marishiten was all but forgotten. Zenkyoan temple in Kyoto enshrines Marishiten and has a collection of boar statues.

At Japanese Shinto shrines, visitors cleanse themselves at a temizuya - a water pavilion near the entrance. Using a ladle, they rinse their hands and mouth in a ritual act of purification, showing respect before approaching the sacred space. How to perform "temizu" ⤵️ :

Anyway, that’s how we ended up doing hatsumode at a tiny tiny little shrine in the middle of an industrial park. It’s a shrine to the god of the sea, the sign said, bc it used to be a fisherman spot, but it’s built up since.

Captured through the lens of photographer Yoshihiko Wada, this dramatic image highlights a bronze dragon spout at the purification pavilion (temizuya) of Shitennō-ji in Osaka, one of Japan's oldest Buddhist temples founded in 593 AD by Prince Shōtoku.

Hiked up to Kameoka Hachimangū 亀岡八幡宮 in Kawauchi, Sendai. I was really struck by all the blue! Blue shredded plastic (recycled?) tassels, cones, lanterns, even blue cars! A knowledgeable friend told me dark blue is the color of victory 勝色.

(Both temizuya were dry? 🥲)

A Shinto shrine has the temizuya, a fountain where you rinse before entering the sacred space. Writing has its own threshold. The same music, same desk, a lamp switched on. The ritual isn’t superstition, it’s a signal to your mind that it’s time to cross into the work.

#Japon

The shrine was apparently established in 211 (THATS TWO HUNDRED ELEVEN AD) and has some of the oldest style of shrine buildings around. (I think. I’m dealing w machine translations lol)

Good morning to you all on this grey day in Tokyo. Rumours of snow hitting the capital today but I doubt we'll see any where we are. Too low-lying and close to the bay.

But, whatever you're up to today, stay warm, stay smiling and be excellent to each other.

Pic from 2016. More in ALT.

Good morning from Tokyo. Hot already. Heading out later with Charlie to see good mate arriving from UK this morning, for a few weeks work in Japan. Chill day for the most part. Been a very busy fortnight.

Pic details in ALT. From a day in a fave spot a few years back.

Have a great day
