Ok this is getting silly now. The red bars are error messages, and green are successful library loads and testthat results with all passing #rstats #ai #arduino

now why the heck would testthat::expect_equal() work interactively but not inside a test_that() function

#rstats new blog post!

"Snapshotting error messages", where I explain why I think all testthat::expect_error() should be replaced by testthat::expect_snapshot(error = TRUE), and where I present an easy, automated way to do this transition.

I still read 100% of the code I write for R packages, where the stakes are generally high. It's really important for testthat, dbplyr, roxygen2 etc, to continue to be robust high-quality code.

Last chance to register for R Package Development (Free Seminar)

R Package Development (Free Seminar) - Livestream starting Aug 18, 2026 (UTC)
Join us for an online workshop designed for PhD students, postdoctoral researchers, and professional researchers who want to turn R analysis scripts into robust, testable, and maintainable R packages. Coordinated by the Biostatistics section of the Statistical Society of Canada, with materials developed by the Quantitative Life Sciences - McGill Initiative in Computational Medicine (QLS-MiCM), this hands-on seminar will guide participants through package structure, unit testing with testthat, code coverage, documentation with roxygen2, and GitHub-based workflows for version control, collaboration, and automated testing with GitHub Actions. Led by Adrien Osakwe, a PhD candidate in Quantitative Life Sciences at McGill University and founding member of the QLS-MiCM student organization, the workshop is ideal for researchers developing statistical software, reproducible workflows, simulation studies, or bespoke analytical tools in R. Participants should have experience writing R scripts, working with Git, and using GitHub and RStudio. The seminar will be delivered via Zoom, with recordings, materials, and a monitored Q&A forum available for 30 days afterward, making it easy to attend live or asynchronously. An official certificate of completion is provided at the conclusion of the seminar. #SoftwareEngineering #Statistics #ComputerScience #Git #Github #R #Research #ResearchTraining #Instats

The Claude Code #GenAI extension works in my Positron IDE - It is happily churning away helping me write {testthat} #RStats unit tests for one of my hobby projects.
Yes, I should have been doing that myself each time I created a function! I'll try to do better. 😅

#PositConf2025 inspired me to get serious about learning the {vitals} and {targets} #RStats 📦s. Any suggested resources besides the 📦 websites?

(Also: I need to get serious about using {testthat} more. And I'm trying out Positron for more coding.)

I'm feeling a little...testy.

That is, I feel like testing my #rstats package! Join Patrick Ward and I for a packed episode on how to write tests for your custom package. We discuss starting with using {testthat}, and how to approach expectations.
