Porcupine puffer fish are engaging and intelligent tropical fish. While they are known as masters of defense, they are also naturally very curious. But don't let their adorableness distract you; their potent toxin, tetrodotoxin, can be lethal to humans.

It's extremetely cute, but when stressed or injured, the yellow boxfish releases the neurotoxin tetrodotoxin (TTX) from its skin, which may prove lethal to fish in surrounding waters. [📹 K_theHermit]

Can you spare a moment to hear the good news about amphibian tetrodotoxin?

And to Tiny Tim, who did NOT die, but merely took a measured, near-lethal dose of tetrodotoxin; a neurotoxin found in the pufferfish, that can emulate the appearance of death.

Which is why his body disappeared right before the second murder! He was never the first victim, but the killer himself!

A Rough-skinned Newt (Taricha granulosa) crawls through a bed of fallen oak leaves on a sunny afternoon today in SW #Oregon. The species is known for its potent tetrodotoxin, one of the strongest natural toxins found in #amphibians #wildlifephotography #cute #photography

Not sure this is a good idea for a house pet.

(They carry tetrodotoxin (TTX))

Because I mentioned tetrodotoxin (TTX), it's worth noting that the fish doesn't produce it: it's made by marine bacteria that the pufferfish's food (worms, snails, crabs, and sea stars) consume.

So it bioaccumulates from low to high concentration in the food chain/web.

lot of those guys have access to e.g. tetrodotoxin

Dolphins play with pufferfish primarily to experience a mild, trance-like high from the fish's potent neurotoxin (tetrodotoxin), which they release when threatened; they gently pass the pufferfish around, chewing it carefully to induce small, intoxicating doses ...😎💙😎

Dolphins are known to "pass around" pufferfish, lightly envenoming themselves with its narcotic-like tetrodotoxin

Debate continues on whether this constitutes animal recreational drug use, but I want to ask a DIFFERENT question:

What's up with the pufferfish's skeleton?

I came into this talk a min late we’re talking about tetrodotoxin present on newt skin w/ @taricha-rivularis.bsky.social

When newts hatch, they are pretty damn toxic, but don’t get more toxic until they go through metamorphosis. Once they become adults they get increasingly more toxic!

RFK Jr: "The toxins in the Blue-ringed Octopus are only dangerous if you're afraid of them. If you deep-fry them at exactly 400 degrees, the heat neutralizes the tetrodotoxin and turns it into a powerful antioxidant and cure for the Hantavirus."

Trump: "We should serve that at Mar-a-Lago."
