LRT: That Anachronox article is great and really goes into how that game was saved largely because Tom Hall is just a really nice dude. He also does a ton of fun stuff like organizing game jams for the PICO-8 community and is worth a follow on Itch too

I got nothing else. You hit the nail on the head. Romero: Hi Sandy. I hope you're doing well. However, you are incorrect. @ThatTomHall wrote the story for DOOM long before you joined id in September 1993, nine months into production. Summarizing Tom's story in two sentences does not equal writing the DOOM story. Not by a long shot.

I respect your decision to not use X/Twitter much anymore, but a situation arose that may concern you, about the development of Doom. Sandy Petersen recently made some statements that John Romero disagrees with about the former’s contributions to Doom.

In 1993 l joined id Software. There was a Doom Bible written by Tom Hall, but I only ever got a brief skim of it. I think it was used by the artists and John Romero to some extent, but I didn't really access it. One of my jobs was actually to write the Doom manual. As part of that I had to name all the enemies. I didn't stretch my brain too far. I mean "Zombie" wasn't a tough call. I changed the "Bruiser Brothers" to "Hell Barons" so there's that. But I also had to create the Doom guy's backstory. I wrote about five entire pages of story, I discussed his previous career, why he was now embittered, what the corporate experiments on Phobos were about, and so forth. Then I started cutting back on the story. I thought it was too much, and who cared anyway? In the end, the final backstory I have is just 2 sentences. You show up on Phobos and there's monsters. But really, what else do you need? I view this as my greatest contribution to digital gaming. If you want to read text, get a book. Anyway if you love backstory, I'm the bad guy here. If you hate backstory, I'm your huckleberry. Hello again, Sandy. This post isn't accurate.
