At 1 am this little guy was chased out of its nest by a predator and fell 12’ onto the brick patio. I put it in a box in my shed overnight and next morning I returned it to the nest. More in alt

A gray dove fledgling is lying in a nest of twigs and pine needles on an oak branch. It’s surrounded by green leaves and small branches. My daughter Emily was up late around 1 am writing in the porch and heard a loud rustling in the oak tree when she saw a baby bird fall to the brick patio and a large animal (maybe a possum) scampering along the oak branch of the nest. She woke me up to help her examine the bird and see if it was hurt, but couldn’t find anything wrong. We put it in a box with some soft rags and put it in the shed. In the morning the fledgling seamed fine. I got the extension ladder out and put it back in the nest as the mother was nearby calling for it. A few days later it was learning to fly.

"Today’s #BirdOfTheDay is #Black&Red, the Alt theme is #LongBeak "

Yesterday I was really lucky to see pelicans on Lake Skadar. Well, isn’t that a long beak? 😁
Have a lovely Saturday, birders ✌️

A head and neck photo of a White Ibis, which has a distinctive down-curved red-orange bill and light blue eyes. Blue water in the background. Interesting information: This ibis is almost entirely white, save for the black-tipped wings and brilliant reddish pink legs and bill. The bare skin around their blue eyes is also reddish pink. Juveniles (fall through winter) are brown above and white below with a streaky brown neck. The legs and bill of juveniles are orange-pink. Immatures (first summer birds) are splotchy brown and white above as they molt into adult plumage. An ibis is a medium-sized wading bird with a long neck, spindly legs, and a distinctive long, downward-curving bill. Colors vary by species. The White Ibis is brilliant white with black wingtips, the Scarlet Ibis is vivid red, and the Glossy Ibis has dark, iridescent chestnut and purple feathers. They live in warm regions worldwide, frequenting shallow wetlands, marshes, lakes, mangroves, and mudflats. Ibises are carnivorous. They eat aquatic invertebrates, crustaceans (like crabs and shrimp), insects, small fish, and occasionally small frogs or snakes. Ibises are highly social birds. They forage, fly, and breed in large, sometimes vast, colonies. They usually build compact stick nests low in trees, shrubs, or dense reeds near water, often sharing nesting spaces with herons or spoonbills.

Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is:
#Black&White; any shot in black and white. Alt. is #Vivid; any bird with bright colors.
#SnowyEgret #wadingBird #birds #nature #wildlife #thelittlethings #ECK #photography #ClassicMono #B&W
A black and white photograph of a Snowy Egret that is standing in the shallows of the beach with a soft wave braking in the background. Interesting information: Among the most elegant of the herons, the slender Snowy Egret sets off immaculate white plumage with black legs and brilliant yellow feet. Those feet seem to play a role in stirring up or herding small aquatic animals as the egret forages. Breeding Snowy Egrets grow filmy, curving plumes that once fetched astronomical prices in the fashion industry, endangering the species. Early conservationists rallied to protect egrets by the early twentieth century, and this species is once again a common sight in shallow coastal wetlands. Male and female Snowy Egrets take turns incubating their eggs. As one mate takes over for the other, it sometimes presents a stick, almost as if passing a baton. Both parents continue caring for the young when they hatch. During the breeding season, adult Snowy Egrets develop long, wispy feathers on their backs, necks, and heads. In 1886 these plumes were valued at $32 per ounce, which was twice the price of gold at the time. Plume-hunting for the fashion industry killed many Snowy Egrets and other birds until reforms were passed in the early twentieth century. The recovery of shorebird populations through the work of concerned citizens was an early triumph and helped give birth to the conservation movement. Snowy Egrets sometimes mate with other heron species and produce hybrid offspring. They have been known to hybridize with Tricolored Herons, Little Blue Herons, and Cattle Egrets.
