I’m actually psyched about tomorrow’s fest. With a winter sports theme, I found the first documentary approved by the Olympics committee (The White Stadium, 1928) and a Werner Herzog doc with the best name (The Great Ecstasy of Woodcarver Steiner) 😁

Do you recall ABC's Wide World of Sports and the #ThrillOfVictory and the #AgonyOfDefeat?

I think this #photo of the reaction to the #NCAA DivII #NationalChampionship #winninggoal as #BloomsburgUniversity won their third straight title beating #BentleyCollege on November 14, 2004.

Moving into the future, we turn to the 1988 Olympics where another team is looking for a miracle: the Jamaican bobsled team. Featuring the jovial John Candy, it’s “Cool Runnings”.

Watching 4-person I think about all the work the middle two put in for 5 seconds of thrillofvictory / agonyofdefeat

And that’s it from #stoatsview for February - see you next month for “Whither Blows the Wind”. Until then, stay safe and sleep well.

Final film of the night: one of the more notorious skating incidents. Here’s a film that’s as much about narratives and perspectives as the event itself. It’s “I, Tonya”, with Margot Robbie, Sebastian Stan, and Allison Janney.

That was short but this next film makes up for it - we zoom forward 8 years to the 1980 Olympics where the US faced off against the powerhouse USSR hockey team. Here’s “Miracle”, in the “Thrill of Victory”.

Next in our Olympic journey, we move on to the Werner Herzog documentary about a skier who gained glory but never lost his zen. It’s “The Great Ecstasy of Woodcarver Steiner”, here at “Thrill of Victory”.

To start out, we’re headed to 1928 for a film that was thought to be lost. It’s mainly silent, but where it’s not, consider it lo-fi Olympics. It’s “The White Stadium”
