Thrinaxodon and broomistega! Triassic cuddle 💕🌿

What if we were both early Triassic vertebrates and we were spending our last moments alive together before being entombed for 250 million years.

@alec-wilken.bsky.social and colleagues analyzed the harmonic response of fossilized ear bones to discover that the 250 million year old mammal precursor Thrinaxodon was capable of tympanic hearing just like modern mammals! 🧪

Lets talk about the fossil that chokes me up every goddamn time.

My sweet precious babies of The Triassic cuddle.

Its a fossil of a Thrinaxodon (a cynodont) and a Broomistega (a small salamander like amphibian).

The Broomistega was found belly up on top of the Thrinaxodon.

To celebrate finishing the 4th print edition of Broomistega & Thrinaxodon, I would like to share the complete comic with you. It's about two very different Triassic animals at the end of the world 1/7 #paleoart #sciart #furryart

They think this because Broomistega was injured, it had broken ribs that showed signs of healing.

And while it did have what appears to be bite marks on it, they don’t match the teeth of Thrinaxodon.

Shortly after a flash flood caused the den to fill with sediment, preserving the eternal cuddle.

It’s Antarctica Day! Give it up for this articulated skeleton of Thrinaxodon, an early mammal relative from 250 million years ago, found in the Transantarctic Mountains 8 years ago. This continent has an amazing fossil heritage that we’re continuing to learn more about!

Personal art of my character Akira as a thrinaxodon!

One of his many forms throughout history!

Happy #FossilFriday everyone! Today we’ve got this pair of juvenile Thrinaxodon, affectionately known as “The Kids”. It’s rare to get such complete skeletons of young cynodonts, so to have two together like this is a real treat! There remains much work to be done to understand cynodont ontogeny! 🧪🦊⚒️

New research shows the 250-million-year-old synapsid Thrinaxodon liorhinus had a middle ear functioning much like modern mammals—suggesting tympanum-based hearing evolved earlier than thought. 🦴👂 In PNAS: https://ow.ly/GBPY50XJOLk

Happy Fossil Friday! Today we've got this adorable pair of juvenile Thrinaxodon, nicknamed "The Kids". Thrinaxodon was a cynodont, which is the group that includes mammals and their closest relatives - this pair died together in a burrow over 200 million years ago in the Triassic 🧪🦊

🦖 Daily Paleo 🦖; Thrinaxodon liorhinus

From Late Permian to Early Triassic South Africa and Antarctica, "smooth-nosed trident tooth" was a fox-sized carnivorous cynodont synspsid that was likely hairy and a burrower, that latter ability helping it to survive the Great Dying

🦖With the new #WalkingWithDinosaurs series releasing soon, I wanted to pay homage to the original one
Based on a very old drawing of mine, here is the cast of Episode 1: New Blood, with some updates to reflect modern knowledge of these Triassic creatures
