This is the second time I have seen a Hummingbird Moth in Chicago. This was at Montrose Point Bird Sanctuary. The previous time was on the very busy Diversey Parkway outside the Versey Hotel feeding on a street planter plant while dozens of oblivious people walked by while I stared in wonder.

I think the species is diffinis. Thysbe is redder.

My Phlox plants were transplanted from my mother's garden, where they'd been propagated from *her* mother's garden. I don't know why Phlox has gone out of fashion, they bloom from mid-July to September. And their scent to me is the essence of Summer. 🌱

We all know that moths are common at night, but there are a few species of moths that fly during the day. One of these is the hummingbird clearwing moth (Hemaris thysbe). The name is fitting: This large moth might be mistaken for a hummingbird because it hovers and beats its wings rapidly while unfurling its long tongue (proboscis) to sip nectar from pink and purple flowers, including beebalm (monarda), bluebells, phlox, honeysuckle and verbena.

Just spotted my first hummingbird moth of the year. Not sure which, as it quickly zipped around the greenery just outside my window. That said, given the warmer shades I think it was a Hummingbird Clearwing aka Hemaris thysbe.

If I'm right...it's like the one in this photo I took in 2020. 🌿 🪲
A color digital photo taken on July 5, 2020 in a backyard in New England. A thick patch of common milkweed in flower is being visited by a Hummingbird Clearwing that is just a bit left and up of center in the frame. The flying native is a type of moth that has a deep warm colored thick band near the middle of its body, with a few partial and thinner similar colored markings below and a dusty yellow section above the band with a slightly olive shaded splotch as if a thumbprint on it's upper body. The moth is native to the area where the image was captured. Given the lower quality of the camera, its wings appear blurred due to the flap speed the moth requires to hover as it feeds from the milkweed's mostly white with bits of pink details umbellate cymes.
