TMITuesday: 'I don't know what edition' (edition).

If I can think of a theme for TIMIT I would, but honestly none are coming to mind right now. Bleh.

We analyzed rectangular, gammatone, cascade & all-pole filterbanks on TIMIT/LibriSpeech to see how gender shapes frequency importance.

🔍 Key takeaway: Learned filterbanks diverge from standard Mel-scale!

Yeah. The corpos fired the academics and researchers (Timit Gebru comes to mind, but there were a bunch of others) a while back when they asked reasonable questions about impacts.

Sometimes I question why I post, why I even try to have a presence on this side of the internet, I'm very timit, I guess to do something or post something.

I think it comes down to I don't like how I look or feel. Most photos I take don't even see the light of day.

Claude of course thinks of ML: "If I had to name the single best non-obvious candidate: standardized test fixtures and reference datasets in ML/science—MNIST, ImageNet, the TIMIT corpus, BLEU's reference translations, even the Iris dataset."

The schedule for the AMP 2025 special session on "Deep Phonology" is now up. We'll be kicking it off with "AI-assisted analysis of phonological variation in English" (we've fine-tuned a wav2vec model on the Buckeye corpus and are evaluating it and other models on the TIMIT corpus).
AMP2025 - Special session
On Saturday, September 27, 2025, following the main AMP session held on September 25-26, 2025, there will be a special session on "Deep Phonology: Doing phonology with deep learning" held on the UC Be...
