Yesterday, I discussed problems with the notion of freedom. I still have more to say, though not exhaustively.

#Timshel x Claudia Morán
«Ti podes» ou «Podes escoller» («Thou mayest»).
Na novela Ao leste do Edén (East of Eden) de John Steinbeck, timshel (תמשל) é a palabra hebrea que serve de fundamento moral e filosófico a toda a historia.

Timshol means "you shall rule over"; timshel doesn't mean anything, let alone thou mayest. Like. It hurts the brain.
Apparently Louis Ginzberg -- midcentury Rabbinics giant -- consulted on the cringiest mistranslation of Hebrew in modern literature.

I like this read -- Ginzberg's accent -- to explain how we got the weird spelling.

No clue how they could have failed so badly on translation, though?

Actually, the key word here, for Jews and Netflix fans, is from Genesis.
Timshel.

Timshel. Qué gran adaptación de 'Al este del Edén' ha hecho Zoe Kazan, aún reduciendo mucho la novela, ha condensado casi toda su esencia centrándose en los personajes más importantes. Me faltó más de la infancia y juventud de Adam. Notable BSO de Laura Karpman.

AAAAA!!! This is gorgeous oh my god??!!. ;_; Thank you so much Happy and Timshel. <3 It's been a rough week, so this lifted my spirits immensely. Absolutely brilliant work as always, Timshel. The iridescent colours on the clam shell pearl are exceptional, and I love AeCha's pose + expression!
Had the opportunity to draw @rynies.com this week!!! Tysm for commissioning me, Happy!!

Yes, but I've always agreed it defeats the notion of Timshel he centered the book around. Also, I never found Cathy to be exceptionally evil. Not when there is the like of Kurtz in Heart of Darkness. To draw from cultural lore Cathy seems more Lilith than Devil.

Yes, any framing is restrictive, but one can't escape metaphor and language in storytelling, so perhaps a goal is to minimise this interference.

And, yes, both Steinbeck and Kazan, subvert Timshel in their renditions, even as Steinbeck mischaracterises it at the start.

Emphasis on "COULD".

We are at "timshel" here, to mangle the word further than even Steinbeck did.

In East of Eden, Lee spends two years learning Hebrew to settle one word. Neither command nor promise: timshel, thou mayest. A choice. It is also a theory of organizations.

Thou Mayest
