The week before the midterms, I reread Steinbeck's East of Eden.

Thou mayest, America.

«Ti podes» ou «Podes escoller» («Thou mayest»).
Na novela Ao leste do Edén (East of Eden) de John Steinbeck, timshel (תמשל) é a palabra hebrea que serve de fundamento moral e filosófico a toda a historia.

Yesterday, I discussed problems with the notion of freedom. I still have more to say, though not exhaustively.

I also often bring up Kwame Ture’s ‘power to lynch’, the best we can do is remove this power. The rest is up to that person but I say timshel to them.

The debate has often been where is that power from and I think class and identity reductionism both fail to answer. But that’s a whole rabbit trail

That final word in East of Eden changes everything.

What does "Timshel" mean, and why is it so important to Cal's future?

We explain the Netflix finale, Cathy's fate and the Trask family's tragedy.

Timshel.

In East of Eden, Lee spends two years learning Hebrew to settle one word. Neither command nor promise: timshel, thou mayest. A choice. It is also a theory of organizations.

Thou Mayest
The most important management meeting in East of Eden is held in a kitchen, and the man who runs it is the servant. Lee keeps house for Adam Trask.

Actually, the key word here, for Jews and Netflix fans, is from Genesis.
Timshel.

Timshol means "you shall rule over"; timshel doesn't mean anything, let alone thou mayest. Like. It hurts the brain.
Apparently Louis Ginzberg -- midcentury Rabbinics giant -- consulted on the cringiest mistranslation of Hebrew in modern literature.

I like this read -- Ginzberg's accent -- to explain how we got the weird spelling.

No clue how they could have failed so badly on translation, though?

Yes, but I've always agreed it defeats the notion of Timshel he centered the book around. Also, I never found Cathy to be exceptionally evil. Not when there is the like of Kurtz in Heart of Darkness. To draw from cultural lore Cathy seems more Lilith than Devil.

Yes, any framing is restrictive, but one can't escape metaphor and language in storytelling, so perhaps a goal is to minimise this interference.

And, yes, both Steinbeck and Kazan, subvert Timshel in their renditions, even as Steinbeck mischaracterises it at the start.
