The South American-derived terror bird Titanis being in North America at about 5 million years ago (not 12 thousand years ago/in the late Pleistocene as sometimes claimed) is interesting from a "When did the Isthmus of Panama start being a thing?" perspective.

I actually pitches some ideas to the author via email, including one focusing on the Hyainailouros-Amphicyon rivalry, one focusing on Titanis at the start of the Pleistocene and one following an adolescent Moschops trying to climb the dominance hierachy.

Titanis Walleri was a dinosaur bird that could run as fast as a car. Their modern relatives might be any large stork or predatory bird. What do you think? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Titanis

Love all of those, I think Globidens is my favorite mosasaur.
The Florida museum of natural history had a sculpture of Titanis walleri when I visited.

Been a mo. Hope everyone is well. I kinda have a garden, but not the expected type. It's actually a planetary system "nearby" if you're a photon and have 12 years to waste 😁 Rec being the Rec about stuff.

None of the big ones made it into the Late Pleistocene (and Titanis is the only definitive one to have made it as recently as the GABI).

#FossilFriday The only known North American terror bird, Titanis first evolved around 5MYA from ancestors that colonized the continent from South America; later, around 3MYA, it became larger (300+kg) and became the largest terrestrial carnivore of southern North America until its own extinction.

Horses didn't always rule the world.

You see, 5 million years ago...

This was a world where birds hunted horses.

Also, the book implies terror birds were outcompeted by carnivorans: they very much were not Titanis first appears in North America BEFORE the land bridge and seems to have evolved there in spite of the competition, while all other big terror birds went extinct before

Do note that the fossilized mount of Titanis is rather inaccurate (compare it to the much more accurate reconstruction below); it is known from only fragmentary remains, and the mount was based on ostriches or smaller terror brids rather than using other large terror birds as reference.

I just finished The Story of Birds by @stevebrusatte.bsky.social and I now have a deeper appreciation and fascination for our avian friends. I've taken to feeding the crows in my neighborhood. Makes me want to go see the fossil of the titanis walleri that's only a few hours away.
