people are struggling to understand that "token middlemen have seen growth primarily from open weight model demand" isn't the same thing as "frontier token demand is dying"

the myth of token subsidies is basically dead, right? open source inference providers are so cheap it proves the true cost of a token is very low, and the high cost of claude tokens imo indicates limited supply rather than propping up demand. oai is able to cut costs because they have more computers

The irony is they are replacing all their non-union humans with agents run by a single organization that can demand changes in wages (aka token costs) overnight without bargaining.

Prediction: there will be a token release of some Epstein material tomorrow, but nothing of consequence and the drama will continue. The Trump administration’s hope is to let the 2 to 3 week congressional vacation over the holidays take the edge off of demand.

In order to be worthwhile for investors, AI companies need to simultaneously:
- increase demand 100,000x
- increase capacity to support that usage
- make a profit instead of a loss on each token

Which, well, lol.

‘The economics of AI are dubious, to put it mildly. Losses cannot spiral upwards indefinitely. As token prices rise to cover costs, demand is likely to contract. The hyperscalers will then be forced to backtrack on their grandiose investment plans.’

The team behind Trump's World Liberty Financial project has proposed lifting restrictions on the WLFI "governance token" to make it tradeable. I predicted shortly after its launch that if Trump succeeded in gutting the SEC, he would do this.

AI demand is such that it no longer makes sense to subsidize token prices to spur adoption.

The end game will be product teams having a token budget along with their headcount budget which they then manage according to their needs.

My Merfolk Token has been added thanks to popular demand! 😊

I painted this when I was an art student dreaming of being able to do what I do now for work. It's a special piece, & I'm happy to be able to include it in my first tokens collection 🖤

Are we nearing a compute crunch?

In our latest Gradient Update, @luke__emberson and @Jsevillamol estimate how many tokens all the Blackwell chips on Earth could serve, and compare this to total token demand. Direct comparisons are difficult, but it appears demand is growing much faster than supply.
