So yesterday I went on an adventure to see a torc!
A torc I've been wanting to see for some time, which I'm pretty sure is the sibling of Newark and Netherurd, made/finished by the same hand...

With today's theft of Vix torc, here's what has been taken...
The torc was found as part of a burial & placed around neck of the interred.
Despite its size, it weighs only 480g (less that half the weight of the Snettisham Great torc). It is STUNNING.

With today's theft of Vix torc, here's what has been taken...

Knowing what I know now (that the Clevedon torc is likely made from a bit of a Snettisham Great torc-like torc) when I'd got them off display, I wish I'd got a photo of them both, up close, side by side.
Ah well! There's always that one more shot that you need!! 🤣

Iron Age torc made from twisted gold, unearthed by ploughing at Cliviger, #Burnley in 1802. The area isn't a hot spot for prehistoric finds, so it is quite something. Manchester Museum acquired it in 1960.

Iron Age torc made from twisted gold, unearthed by ploughing at Cliviger, #Burnley in 1802. The area isn't a hot spot for prehistoric finds, so it is quite something. Manchester Museum acquired it in 1960.

Colour difference suggests torc might be gilded, although by no means certain.
From colour, I don't think it's solid gold & they didn't plate then. It could also be bronze, but with better preservation.
