Interestingly enough, while the Aramashikyo abandoned religion, the TORIFUNE actually has an entire shrine built within it. It's very likely that the TORIFUNE is more recent, so at some point, scientists did try to embrace religion again (not that it worked on the TORIFUNE).

On Sunday at 18:30 JST, Hayabusa2 will attempt flyby observations of asteroid Torifune on an Extended Mission after delivering the samples from asteroid Ryugu to Earth 🛰️. Hayabusa2 was designed for rendezvous observations, so must get pretty close to the asteroid for good data 🔭. Cross everything 🤞

Next July, JAXA's Hayabusa2 (having returned to deep space after delivering the samples from asteroid Ryugu in 2020) will perform a flyby observation of asteroid Torifune 🛰️🧪. One issue: the spacecraft was designed for rendezvous, not flyby. So we need to get REAL CLOSE 🔭 but not OOPS 💥 close.

Asteroid Torifune was just imaged by Japan's Hayabusa 2. This asteroid is a rubble pile. If you could gently place it in the middle of a parking lot, it might look something like this. 🔭 #astro

Torifune is about 450m across with a mass of 180 million tonnes; Kamo'oalewa is about 20m across with a mass of only 7000 tonnes.

ZUN : The name of a small asteroid that we'll be visiting is Torifune, right? It's interesting that the name was chosen by a public campaign. I wonder what we'll find there, Maybe ruins?
(Torifune is a small asteroid that the satellite Hayabusa 2 will be flying past in 202).
