I'm a millennial and an excellent typist (I have to be, kinda my job) but I had several years of typing lessons in school
The funny part is none of it stuck and I was a hunter/pecker for a long time but kinda gradually invented touchtyping for myself anyway?

Every single gen X scrub had two years of high school typing class and hunt and pecks 20 wpm. Every single millennial never had formal instruction and types perfect form 100 wpm because of AIM

i can type pretty swiftly on my home keyboard (not touchtyping for sure, but yeah), and when im typing on a keyboard at work, im like, oof, ouch, ourgh, oof, cause its a laptop and the layout will be just compressed enough to fuck me over and i press whatever is above the compressed enter key

I think that the creators of typewriters and the design of where the letters should go had no earthly idea about the future of touchtyping on a phone screen and autocorrect and the sheer fucking chaos that would ensue.

My grandfather bought us a COLECO Adam, specifically to try to get me to learn to type, but I had no interest in using it for anything other than playing games... It wasn't until I discovered BBS a few years later that I taught myself touchtyping basically by happenstance.
