the real war on Christmas is US trade policy
right as we head into holiday seasonal shopping
over time I believe this will end up being one of the most unpopular things the administration ever does

a death sentence for many hobbies and all the average consumer sees is that you’re taking away all their bargains

one of the few policies that has a direct negative effect on almost everyone

Our trade deal so far is no tariffs on Rolls Royces and Bentleys and our refugee policy is white South Africans only.

Congress didn’t just lose its power it gave it away. On war, trade, and policy, lawmakers have willingly let the executive branch rule unchecked.

We’re moving from one phase of illegal, erratic trade policy — to a new phase of illegal, erratic trade policy.

This is what Republican economic policy has come down to: no trade with anyone.
“We could do tremendous good for ourselves by just not trading with countries” — Trump’s bonkers view of trade is that you become wealthy by not engaging in commerce

They did tariff relief for Bentleys before bananas

Deeply, deeply unserious trade policy

This is just absolutely perfect. Kennedy destroys Lutnick and vividly illustrates the absurdity of the Trump trade policy. bsky.app/profile/atru...
KENNEDY: If Vietnam came to you and said, 'You win. We're gonna remove all tariffs and all trade barriers. Would the US please do the same?" Would you accept that deal?

LUTNICK: Absolutely not. That would be the silliest thing we could do

KENNEDY: What's the purpose of reciprocity then?

Carney: "We can't control the trade policy of the US. We recognize it has fundamentally changed from the policy in the 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, & it's a situation where US has tariffs against every trading partner... what we we can control is developing new partnerships, including w/econ giants of Asia"

Starting unprovoked trade wars to extort our partners is actually really shitty foreign policy.
President-elect Donald Trump’s brandishing of tariffs on goods from Canada, Mexico and China marks the passage from one era to another: Partnerships are out, and coercion is in.
