It would take 8547 fully loaded standard truck tanker trailers to move a single VLCCs worth of crude from transload to transload. So of course someone thinks this is a spectacular idea.

Watching Boomer Diorama on YT and reading Lance Mindheim motivated me to scratchbuild an N Scale truck transload facility, rather than use the kit I originally was building (footprint shown inside the new building)
It just seemed too small so shortened an ABF facility that I took measurements of 🏢📏

Really just used the truck door sides from both kits to create a truck-only transfer terminal and made myself an interior floor as I want to be able to look in and see little details like stacks of boxes 🚛📦

now I worry if the (now ABF) truck to truck transload building is too small, but to fit room for those 53’ trailers it’s going to need a looooot of parking lot around it

I'm not sure how long it will be up as I'm planning to replace it with a more permanent model of the Morristown and Erie Railway's Jefferson Road transload facility, which has been the plan for about five years now.

Foam base added to the layout bench work and so spent some time staging some freight on top of my track plan to make some tweaks after measuring consist lengths 📏🚂
The other half of the layout will be industries, just a matter of confirming which… (transload warehouse + lumber + cement terminal?)

Oh goodness it’s actually in far SE Iowa so either ~800 miles by rail, some sort of transload situation to barge in Saint Paul (still 200+ miles by rail).
A standard consist of 15 Mississippi barges has 1/4 the capacity of a laker. And there are 20 locks to navigate.

And actually pretty surprised to find that building at the top right of both images, is the same building, so it's been around since at least 1963 - they've added a transload dock at the bottom now for trucks, but the rest of the building is largely the same

To support this, new import terminals will have to be built on the Atlantic coast. There will have to be another transload into rail cars, with a different traffic pattern. can it be done? Yes. will it be very costly to start up? Absolutely.

To add some context: I used to run a transload yard. We got several cars worth of Canadian lumber in for just the couple small yards we serviced every week. If the squeeze on domestic supply is real (and I don't doubt it) and we piss on the Canadian supply.... new build prices are gonna SOAR.
If you're planning to use dimensional lumber for *anything* in the near-to-mid-future, buy it NOW.
Hurricane Helene has flooded the market with salvage and we're like weeks away from pissing off our most important ally and trading partner (who also produces insane amounts of lumber). On top of 1/4

There isn't space in the yard to bring a truck and cranes alongside to transload. Again, if the trainset was delivered by rail, it'd likely be transloaded in a place like Burr Oak

Maybe just a silo-launched missile or two to keep people on their toes? Israel doesn't claim many TELs have been destroyed. The other possibility is that they can't transload missiles out of the bunkers they do have due to damage to the entrances
