Nearly one-third of Lake Memphremagog's brown bullhead catfish are spotted with an inky-black cancer.

It’s a rare form of the disease. Tthis melanoma is not an abnormal growth of each fish’s own tissue. It appears to be a single cancer that has somehow spread from fish to fish.

Cancer that spreads like a parasite?

A new study in Nature reveals that black lesions on Lake Memphremagog’s brown bullheads are caused by a single clonal cancer lineage spreading fish-to-fish—making it the first transmissible cancer known in fish!

Clams are important for studying the origins and mechanisms of cancer? There are at least 10 different lineages of transmissible cancers that can spread among different species of clams, making them critical for understanding cancers that affect other animals. (Like, uh, I dunno... humans!?)
