So this is patently untrue. I go to the Mayo Clinic and have been under active surveillance for almost 6 years now after being diagnosed in 2019 with Gleason 6. I’m a fit 71 and the doctors there recommend continuous screening including MRI’s and PSA tests and a periodic Transperineal Biopsy.

If the MRI shows something funky the next step is a biopsy. You might have a local anesthetic and butt stuff, or you might be put under while your doc performs a transperineal op. I had both (at different times).

I got a Transperineal biopsy under general anesthesia. It wasn't painful at all.

I highly recommend it!

Happy to report my prostate biopsy went very well. It helped that this was my second and so I knew what to expect. Also, this one was performed at a university teaching hospital by the person who teaches how to do these things. She was brilliant, as were her team. #Gratitude. (See ALT for details)

NEWS: New biopsy technique found to improve prostate cancer detection

The trial led by @ox.ac.uk showed that transperineal biopsy is better than traditional transrectal at diagnosing prostate cancer, but takes longer to perform and is more painful.

Infection rates were significantly lower in TP vs. TR at 7 days (p=0.033) and 35 days (p=0.034), tho' not 4 months (p=0.1). Not sure why this is being reported as "negative" for infection www.thelancet.com/journals/lan...
