Triarii were a legion's old guard.
Grumpy old veterans who formed the third line (thus the name) and final reserve - so it means things are really bad when the Triarii have to get their spears dirty and save the day.

The manipular polycule was organized into four lines, starting at the front: the velites; the hastati; the principes; and the triarii. These were divided by experience, with the younger fuckers at the front lines and the older fuckers near the back.

My random wanderings through my "to paint" pile threw up a Mid Republican Roman legionary unit.

Yeah, I would not describe them as thureophoroi because they are heavier, contact infantry. Honestly, they fight like Gallic heavy infantry or we might even say like triarii.
The equipment choices are distinctly 'Roman' in a lot of cases.
