Most people don't think of wasps being aquatic, but there are definitely some that exist, such as Agriotypus sp. They are parasitoids of Trichoptera pupae and pre-pupae. #Agriotypus #Ichneumonidae

It was only in 2018 that researchers reported caddisfly cases containing tiny plastic particles. 👀

But I couldn’t stop wondering: what if this had been happening much earlier? 🤔 Could historical specimens reveal that caddisflies were incorporating plastic long before we noticed? 🐛 6/x

Sorting samples today from Honduras. These are some of the most delicate cased caddisflies (Trichoptera) I’ve come across.

They construct them using tiny stones held together by silk produced from modified salivary glands

Caddisflies (Trichoptera) are usually found near lakes, ponds, and streams. Their larvae are aquatic and most build cases to conceal and protect themselves. Although adults resemble moths and fly at night, their wings are covered in hairs instead of scales. Palmyra Michigan, 29 Sep 2014.

White miller caddisflies (Trichoptera: Leptoceridae: Nectopsyche spp.) are often attracted to lights, but they normally hang out near slow moving water their aquatic young require. Larvae build portable cases from bits of sand and plant material for protection. Blissfield Michigan, 28 Jun 2025.
