One of the oldest, and most tedious, racist tropes. Just dialling it in now. Low energy. Sad.

If movie tropes have taught me anything, trouble is brewing.

This is completely a me problem, but I hate that books are marketed as a list of tropes. I bet the books are great! I just find them disincentivizing. Just deflated my enthusiasm.

A guy wearing dorky underwear under "cool" clothes is one of the hottest tropes ever

*Whispers* the tropes! They have returned!! 📚 #romancelandia

when people described this to me i was like "this is all just anime tropes" and good god it IS all anime tropes
and it's just so fucking... mean spirited, weird and cheap about women??? like????

In addition to this absurd chart, the article is full of Daily Mail/CSJ tropes (confusing "benefits" with all state spending, talking about "work incentives" while ignoring fact PIP is non-means tested, etc, etc). Inexcusable from FT.
Britain's welfare ratchet.

My column for @financialtimes.com. Political incentives, rising expectations on the state & deeper economic failings make the UK's benefits system hard to rein in.

I just wish more of the people I made deeply upset had remembered that I publish horror under a different name so they won't go in expecting urban fantasy tropes. Horror has different rules, and the breaking points are much grimmer.
Horror writers are like "If I can make just one person deeply upset, it will all be worth it."

sqq is soooo trapped by tropes and archetypes and even self surveilling via tropes and archetypes but his love of binghe was illegible to the language of all the roles and tropes that he knew and it was REAL!!!!

For the true election and rumor nerds in my feed — here's the draft of our full paper on election rumor tropes (2020-2022), led by students and postdocs at the CIP. It includes a framework that illuminates the grammar of election rumors & an appendix of 100s of micro-tropes. arxiv.org/pdf/2610.37804

(I enjoy obvious tropes)

My warm take is tropes are popular for a reason and many of them are based snd cool. Ultimately I hope people continue to write and read what brings them joy. IMHO being afraid of tropes is actually a symptom of cringe culture and bad faith lenses moreso than an innate boredom of cliches.

I love tropes!
Across 3 election cycles, our team has identified a set of tropes — or common story elements — that are repeatedly integrated into election rumors. Here, we present a "trope framework" & explain how it helps us anticipate what to expect on election day & beyond. uwcip.substack.com/p/weve-seen-...

Like I also feel like, the tropes are huge spoilers sometimes? Even if it is just an implication of a topic.

Oh my god he's the offspring of one of my favorite tropes this rules.

I mean, considering Star Trek birthed so many fic tropes, they could have done, and it would have been appropriate. <3

Un Jour sans moi @UnJourSansMoi

I still remember when they tried to weaponize tropes against Meghan Sussex, portraying her as a classless, self-centered, angry Black woman and a bully.

George was never subtle bout anything.
Little too hamfisted with tropes, but as I said, nothing he did was subtle.

“Tropes [are] part of this larger conversation that is always happening between the readership and the creators,” says @dianapho.bsky.social. “And what has happened in the last 20 years...is that capitalism has rolled in and said, ‘Hey, look at this conversation. How can we profit off of it?’”

A decade after our big survey on fanfiction tropes, they’ve spread, evolved, and been co-opted by capitalism.

Here's one of those spooky tropes about being cursed and trapped in a dollhouse.

Except the dollhouse belongs to @mousehold.bsky.social and the curse is sexy.

It's not so much subverting tropes as it is lightly pickpocketing a trope before stealing its car
