This week on #MonographMonday, we have a plate from the second instalment of Thomas Davidson's fossil brachiopod monographs. This time its fossils from the Cretaceous! This plate features species from several genera: Crania, Thecidea and Lingula.

Haworthia truncata, commonly called the “Horse’s Teeth,” features thick, fleshy, rectangular leaves arranged in opposite rows, giving the appearance of a row of green, squared-off teeth. It's unique, but don't tell friends you buried your horse.

I usually find loads of these but this year they've been a bit thin on the ground.

Generally these partnership develop over very long time scales, allowing both partners to specialize. The frog would have specialized adaptations like digestive enzymes, olfactory sensitivity.

This just seems like a new thing, promoted by the unique coastal biome of Brazil.

The seeds from the un-chomped fruit pass through the frog & germinate in new locations.

So seed dispersal & pollination in one partner: Brazilian flowering plants made a good deal!

But it begs the question: how did this get started & why isn't it more common?
A tree frog linked to flowers
Xenohyla truncata, commonly known as the Izecksohn's Brazilian Tree Frog, may not seem particularly unusual, but this unique species is the only known frugivorous frog in the world. The species, one o...

The contents of X. truncata's stomach have been found to contain seeds, whole undigested fruits, sand (suggesting they're eating from the ground) & nectar.

They've been observed climbing into milk fruit flowers, lapping up sweet nectar (with "suction-like movements") & carrying away pollen grains.

Izecksohn’s Brazilian tree frog (Xenohyla truncata) is the only known frugivorous frog & now we think it may be the only pollinating amphibian.

But here's a trick: how do you eat fruit with only teeny-tiny maxillary teeth?

Easy, you just swallow the fruit whole.
It’s the first time a frog—or any amphibian—has been observed pollinating a plant, researchers reported in 2023.

O trabalho descreveu sete espécies novas no conjunto estudado e registrou as primeiras cinco espécies amazônicas do gênero Scissicauda: S. antennata, S. aurata, S. gomesi, S. jamari e S. truncata.

There wasn't much in the trap this morning. I'm assuming the #moths are also feeling the change in weather because it felt chilly when I went outside. Still, I got a Rusty-dot Pearl, which is new for the year, and a second Frosted Orange.

This Common Marbled Carpet is from yesterday. #teammoth
