They are very colorful and shiny due to barium sulphate crystals inside their bodies, they come in various symmetrical forms, and some join together to form colonies. This sample was gathered at the base of a waterfall I saw while hiking.

Desmids have high degrees of symmetry which remind me of paper snowflakes. Enjoy!
