It’s the last day of my Birthday Month! It’s been a busy month and it’s been good! But because of that I forgot to share the illustration I did for August for the Institut Tshakapesh calendar until just now.

Here the character Tshakapesh is spear fishing at night with a torch to attract the fish, from a traditional birchbark canoe, on a lake surrounded by fireweed flowers.

This is the watercolour illustration I made for the month of June, featured in the 2026 Innu calendar for Institut Tshakapesh. Every month depicts a different scene of traditional Innu life and culture, along with flora and/or fauna local to the Innu peoples’ ancestral land.

I painted this illustration for the Innu calendar for the month of May:A time for hunting and fishing as the weather begins to warm up
Thank you to Institut Tshakapesh for commissioning me for this project, depicting Innu culture and customs throughout the year

I received a copy of the 2026 calendar I illustrated for Institut Tshakapesh and the Innu communities of Quebec. Here’s the illustration I painted for April: Slowly melting lakes, ducks returning after a long winter.

Welcome to March!
Here’s another illustration I made for the Tshakapesh calendar that now hangs in the homes of Innu people all over Quebec.
March is the month of the woodchuck/groundhog in Innu culture.
This piece is watercolour & ink on paper.

A new month, a new page from the calendar I illustrated for Institut Tshakapesh. For the month of February we wanted to highlight a cold winter night, with the Snow Moon, northern lights, and a hot cup of tea.
February 4, 2026 at 3:16 PM
For the front I tried to incorporate as many themes from each month as possible, including the changing seasons. I really love how this piece came out.
All of these illustrations are watercolour and ink on paper.

In addition to the illustrations I made for the 12 months of the year, I also did paintings for the front and back cover of the calendar for Institut Tshakapesh.

In this illustration for the month of January, Tshakapesh crushes caribou bones to extract the marrow, ensuring no part of the animal is wasted. January is the Great Month, the month of very cold temperatures.
I’ll be sharing each month’s illustrations as we get to them throughout the year.

It was enriching to pore over and study this book so that my own illustrations would be culturally accurate.
In addition to the cultural details, each scene within the calendar depicts the character of Tshakapesh, a legendary Innu folk hero.
January 31, 2026 at 2:19 PM
Therefore it was very important that I didn’t accidentally mix up the two cultures within my illustrations.
To help, Intitut Tshakapesh gave me Akua-Nutin, a book filled with detailed illustrations of traditional Innu cultural activities, clothing, types of lodging, language, and so much more.
January 31, 2026 at 2:18 PM
I wanted to be sure I shared this before the end of January!
Every year Institut Tshakapesh in Uashat, Quebec releases a calendar depicting Innu culture. I was hired to illustrate the 2026 calendar, and it was such a rich experience.
