UDOLPHO is just Scooby-Doo and it needs matching sound effects.

do you have any idea how many fascinating novels, books with infinite cinematic and dramatic potential, are the in public domain? but you have to read them first. gutenberg has got em. Do The Mysteries of Udolpho! Do The Castle of Otranto! Do something with Maldoror! 2/3

“Have you ever read Udolpho, Mr. Thorpe?”

“Udolpho! Oh, Lord! Not I; I never read novels; I have something else to do.”
Oh, do romance readers read too much? Of the wrong kind of books, you say? In the wrong kind of language, you say? Are they too easy, too sexy, too fun, too silly? And we’re pretending this is not The argument that people have made against romance since (checks library) 1785?

My 2001 Midwich Cuckoos pitch, stymied by legal action, is the latest addition to the Unmade Projects downloads. The list so far: The 39 Steps, Dracula, The Saint, The Mysteries of Udolpho, The Birth and History of the SAS, Doctor Syn, and a bonus Warriors' Gate. Code CFX to open the protected PDFs
I've added a new feature to my website where I'll make a selection of script pitches, outlines, and early drafts available for download. The PDFs themselves will be password protected in a futile attempt to keep the scrapers at bay, but the code's right there. First up, John Buchan's The 39 Steps

i recently saw a post calling for lesser known gothics to be adapted and the mysteries of udolpho was on the list…..i am willing to believe there is some soul out there who actually wants a mysteries of udolpho film but i am going to need some convincing that you are that person
i don’t trust any commentary on the gothic that can’t admit that ann radcliffe is not very good. i think sometimes people wheel her out just to sound knowledgeable and i think hm….and are we going to acknowledge that….to put it charitably….mysteries of udolpho is surely one of the books ever written

200 pages in and we’re not even at Villa Udolpho yet. Ann, girl, let’s speed this up.

I would just like everyone to know that there’s a French novel from 1875 featuring real-life gothic horror author Ann Radcliffe (The Mysteries of Udolpho) as the leader of a band of vampire hunters. The RPF urge cannot be defeated!
This trend of writing historical mysteries where real-life authors such as Jane Austen and Agatha Christie solve actual murders is just confusing to me.

“How strange it is, that a fool or a knave, with riches, should be treated with more respect by the world, than a good man, or a wise man in poverty!”

("The Mysteries of Udolpho")

Ann Radcliffe was born #otd 1764

I’m on a 1700s gothic horror kick: Castle of Otranto, Mysteries of Udolpho… anyone got any other faves?

(nb: Frankenstein, King in Yellow, and Dracula are all 1800s, I’m after earlier novels!)

Someone just wrote me that they started reading Radcliffe’s MYSTERIES OF UDOLPHO because of my recommendation of it in JANE AUSTEN’S BOOKSHELF (they have an arc). “It’s a page turner!” I am so deeply gratified by that. Made my day.

Now added, THE MYSTERIES OF UDOLPHO. The classic of Gothic literature, met head-on for television treatment. "One of my most thorough and ambitious pitches that not only broke story but then laid out a plan for tackling casting and production issues."
