A million barcodes and still ~20,000 undescribed insects waiting in the trays — California's arthropod diversity is wild. Is most of that undescribed set from hyper-diverse groups like parasitoid wasps and flies?

This symposium was a deep dive into the mysterious wonders hidden inside our museums, from undescribed species to the people that collected them.

Museum drawers hold centuries of undescribed biodiversity At #iBOL2026, Dr. Ben Price (@nhm-london.bsky.social, editor at @bdj.pensoft.net and @zookeys.pensoft.net, @biogeneurope.bsky.social partner) showed how high-throughput museomics can open them up at scale. Talk: Unlocking the Linnaean Legacy

Activepieces says a DeepSeek cache hit costs 50x less than a miss, and to retry failures with backoff. Its own contract has no error semantics and no idempotency. Kin Score 52.2.

Substantial Neotropical bat diversity likely remains undescribed and vulnerable to extinction
Scientists race against time to discover and describe new species as global biodiversity faces increasingly severe threats, including habitat destruction, climate change, invasive species, and anthropogenic disturbance. Although taxonomists describe hundreds of new species every year, the true extent of global biodiversity and the number of undescribed species remain elusive1,2. Conservative estimates suggest our planet harbors between 5 and 9 million species3,4, yet scientists have formally named only about 1.9 million5,6, with much of this discrepancy attributed to cryptic and unrecognized diversity. This knowledge gap, known as the Linnean shortfall7,8, is particularly concerning because individual species are the primary currency of biodiversity research, as well as the foundation in ecology, evolution, and conservation9. So, understanding real species diversity is critical not only for exploring patterns and processes shaping biodiversity but also for developing effective conservation initiatives10. Current extinction rates, while debated in scale, are exceeding natural levels by several orders of magnitude11,12,13,14,15,16, underscoring the urgency of addressing the Linnean shortfall. According to the IUCN, thousands of species are categorized as critically endangered (CR), endangered (EN), or vulnerable (VU), but these figures likely underestimate the true scale of biodiversity at risk, even more so if we consider data deficient (DD) and...

Which is why there are whole reptiles and fish and plants that people breed or propagate and buy and sell and keep and their names basically work out to be things like "some undescribed gecko species" or "Corydoras no. 500" or "Hoya sort of like this other Hoya but not actually it".

🐸Common tree frog (Polypedates leucomystax).

It seems to be a species complex with several undescribed species.

Max. size for males, 5 cm (2"), for females 7.5 cm (3").

Found in wetlands and forests in South and Southeast Asia.

Considered Least Concern by the IUCN.

🐝 Around 80% of insect species remain undescribed. As a result, we do not know if their populations are secure or at risk of decline.

Our article explores ways to better assess extinction risk in such a vast and poorly known group of animals. 📖 Read it here: doi.org/10.1002/ecog...

Where it gets tricky is when the unwanted topics don't have precise keywords and would hide everyday postings as well (like ice or ICE trains), or when people obscure what they're talking about by not using keywords, or using undescribed images.

The undescribed images in the post show air quality stripes for London (quality improving), Jakarta (quality declining), Islamabad (quality plummeting), and Beijing (quality currently recovering from very bad).
This is fascinating. I've just discovered the Air Quality Stripes project (modelled on the climate stripes), showing how air quality in different cities has changed over time. Look up your city! A good news story in the UK, less so in other places.

Quick wins are possible!

Oh, damn, this was a good one. As with many novels from the 1970s, no tit goes undescribed. But Leonard's great strength is creating characters who constantly surprise. (I suspect they sometimes surprised him.)
