Android apps can implement their own push service or allow the user to choose a service via the UnifiedPush framework. Play Store has a policy of requiring FCM for most use cases for battery reasons but there are exceptions. Unlike iOS, Android allows installing apps from other app stores / sources.

my kingdom for signal to add unifiedpush support or something
I am keenly aware of how evil the various social media sources I use are, but I am not willing to be That Guy and torch at least a few existing social relationships to try and force a migration, so basically mentally I am in hell at all times.

This isn't less private on Android. On iOS, using the Apple Push Notification Service is the only way to do push messaging / push notifications. On Android, Google's Firebase Cloud Messaging is one option among many. Android apps can also implement their own push or use a UnifiedPush provider.

Installing Signal in a profile without sandboxed Google Play and granting the power optimization exception it requests is enough to destroy battery life and end up worse than the stock Pixel OS. The power efficient choices are either using Molly with UnifiedPush (Signal fork) or Signal with FCM.

Never knew about UnifiedPush!
I would assume all notification-sending devices would be affected. Android has Molly at least, which is open source and you can use your own (private) UnifiedPush notification service with it.

This also means that, potentially, @bsky.app could use UnifiedPush in the future :3c

🤳 Tired of your #Android phone's push notifications going through Google's servers? #UnifiedPush lets you process them on a server of your choice.

Enabling it for the Nextcloud Talk app only takes three steps. Read the instructions here: 👉 nextcloud.com/blog/unified...

Running both sandboxed Google Play and an efficient UnifiedPush app can have competitive battery life with the stock Pixel OS. Those should be the only 1-2 battery optimization exceptions for most users. Signal's fallback push will drain more power than all the bloatware in the stock OS itself.

/e/OS 2.5 now integrates UnifiedPush by default. A first step toward non-Google push notifications on smartphones.
And it is open source.

KUnifiedPush, KDE's client library for the UnifiedPush protocol, has reached version 1.0.0. KunifiedPush provides a more efficient way of delivering notifications instantly to multiple apps on your devices, even if said apps are not running.

Support for UnifiedPush is now merged in @Tuba, the GNOME Fediverse Client. It will be available starting with the next major release

It's great to see new Linux apps added to the list of supported applications!

not many of us have discord or want to use it. is not reilable, is not really e2ee... is purely insecure.

if it was for wishing, an app which used unifiedpush? even if it is just a basic one.

webhooks from a repository would be also an option, or rss?

Use Molly instead of Signal. Use UnifiedPush if you want to avoid Google's push messaging service (FCM) while still having good battery life.

Are you using it for unifiedpush or for notifications

A common reason people end up with poor battery life is Signal's WebSocket push due to not using Play services for FCM. It works but is inefficient. A better option is the Molly fork of Signal with MollySocket for UnifiedPush. Signal's WebSocket push could be far more efficient but it is what it is.
