Morning Droplet

This image combines 3 photos taken with a polarization filter at different angles, each assigned to a color channel:
🔴 0°
🟢 45°
🔵 90°

Unpolarized light appears #Monochrome, while refraction in the droplets disrupts this balance, revealing subtle colors.

When many light waves are emitted at the same time, but they each have a different polarization, the resulting effect is “unpolarized” light. Light from the sun is unpolarized. But when the light scatters with our atmosphere, it becomes polarized and leaves a distinct pattern in the sky.

1. Founders didn't foresee parties, which undermine the separation of powers.
2. But with unpolarized parties, it still worked OK.
3. Even with polarized ones (1990s-) it wasn't SO bad since there was often divided govt & legislators didn't fear their party's President as much as Rs now do Trump.
The Founders feared foreign influence over leaders and assumed Congress would jealously guard its prerogatives. And yet the ostensible proponents of originalism look away.
Mike Johnson: "Look, I've been a little busy on reconciliation, so I'm not following all the twists and turns of the Qatar jet. My understanding is it's not a personal gift to the president ... other nations give us gifts all the time ... it's not my lane."

The basic problem with how people talk about media ecosystems impacting views of the economy is the implicit idea that the media ecosystem was "objective" in the past. I think there's a far stronger argument that an unpolarized corporate press gave overly rosy sense of the economy in the past.

🔬🥟 What do empanadas and #mitochondria have in common?
More than you'd think. Our "empanada-shaped" cells just helped uncover hidden subpopulations of mitochondria in your everyday, unpolarized cell lines. Curious how mitochondrial trafficking shapes network health?

Not all unpolarized citizens are alike—some feel lukewarm toward parties while others feel cold, with different effects on democratic participation. 🗳️❄️😐

my favorite thing about these arguments about expanding versus contracting the tent when turnout in the US has never cracked 70%. "We have to scrabble over the few dumbasses left unpolarized instead of reaching out to the disillusioned" these are the words of the people who lost last time!!!

Just LOOK at this absolutely beautiful eclipse! 🔭🧪

Just published — polarization of light from the Sun's corona, as observed by our Citizen CATE 2024 project during the total solar eclipse in Australia (April 2023), is mapped to colors. (More ⬇️). Stunning!

Once they go fash, it's true they're in a separate information sphere you can't control.

But it's about the fresh pseudoscience seeds people are attempting to plant in unpolarized soil right now. That's just sowing future problems if left unopposed.

In a new paper, @polpsychjoe.bsky.social , @lilymasonphd.bsky.social, and I argue that such questions assume homogenous levels of norm support and participation among affectively UNpolarized citizens. That is, we tend to treat all affectively unpolarized citizens as one

In this image, the polarization angle is mapped to color — some animals (like bees, fish, birds, and more) can actually see polarization, so this gives us some analogy of how humans might perceive polarized light if our eyes were sensitive to it. White = unpolarized.

The weirdest thing about Texas's primary is that it appears ideologically unpolarized. We see the demographics that historically vote moderate in Democratic primaries voting for the more progressive candidate and vice versa.

The proportion of light that gets through a polarizer is cos^2(angle between light polarization and filter polarization).

If the filters point the same direction they act like a single filter, and 1/2 of unpolarized light gets through (average value of cos^2 across all light polarization angles).

Yesterday I learned that fiddler crabs can distinguish between polarized and unpolarized light, which helps them see other crabs at a distance.

Does that count?
