it’s a line of thinking that only exists while anthropic gives you a crap load of frontier tokens for $20/mo. i think the incentives will be swinging back to upstreaming and sharing again once that’s over

[2/2] NetApp looked at their patches and categorized them to understand why each custom patch existed. The amount of code flagged for upstreaming went from 5% to 12%.

I try upstreaming a mesa patch. Validation fails on meteor lake. There's a bug in ffmpeg. I fix ffmpeg and upstream the fix. I try upstreaming another thing, write a reproducer that uses Vulkan video samples from Khronos. It breaks because there's a bug in the CLI tool that wraps vulkan calls in […]

My favorite detail: gVisor going vendor-neutral opens the door to upstreaming the kernel perf patches every sandbox provider has been carrying. Ant Group, Modal, and Tines are joining as maintainers.

- There is a person that has a fix for a given issue in a given OSS thingy. Quite popular issue actually.
- The problem: They used AI somewhere in the process and therefore admit they can’t comply with the software policy to contribute back so that everyone can benefit.

Untriaged volume highlights the maintainer burden of upstreaming patches across fragmented downstream forks.

Haha... No worries. Happy to help. My instance has some more tweaks that I will be upstreaming progressively.

Credit to everyone doing the upstreaming. Getting SoC support into mainline instead of living in a fork is slow, unglamorous work, and it's what keeps hardware usable long after the vendor stops caring about it.

making wayland-rs compile on windows by tossing `#[cfg(unix)]` on file descriptor passing is +965 -186. i can’t tell if it’s worth upstreaming that since it’s something nobody has ever wanted before or will ever want again

The collaboration part is not meant wrt to maintainance strategy but:

* Discussion around the endeavor beforehand
* Making sure this is an „actual port“
* Establishing that benchmarks are correct
* Upstreaming improvements
* and so on

Tyr is proving what Rust can bring to Linux GPU development.

By successfully booting the Arm Mali-G610 MCU, the driver is validating new upstream DRM and GPU memory-management abstractions while helping strengthen the Rust infrastructure behind future kernel drivers.

Upstreaming looks like a wall. Mainline Wine maintainers are notoriously cautious about merging OS-specific hacks that complicate the codebase, leaving commenters skeptical that these OpenBSD patches will ever live outside a separate downstream tree. 3/4

AWS released TorchNeuron — a one-config-line port of PyTorch apps onto its own Trainium chips. They're also upstreaming code to unhook PyTorch from Nvidia. Deepgram reportedly does 70% more audio per dollar on Trainium. The CUDA lock-in just got its first serious software crack. https://techcrunch.c
