Because the tiny stuff matters.

A one-person-wide path, a shop facing a junction, a bridge over a nala, a cluster of shared open space, these things can explain how a neighborhood works better than a clean zoning diagram ever could.

So I keep wondering whether the interesting architectural move is neither preservation nor tabula rasa, but something closer to urban surgery: keep what works, repair what can work, replace what genuinely can’t, and add what the place is missing.

A masterplan sees land use. A resident sees the route to work, the neighbor who watches their child, the shop that gives credit, the shortcut through an alley, the room added when family grows.

Both are spatial systems. They just record different things.

They said they were attracted by the blunt title, “How To Actually improve A City.”

Inspiration is very important, but ideas, action, leadership and much more persuasive communication are key to the urban change we badly need.
