Honestly that's what appeals to me most about Tolkien. All that stuff about dragons and uruk-hai and Morgoth andTúrin Turambar and what have you is fine in its place, but give me the stuff where he's trying to be Chesterton.
I do think a lot of readers don’t notice that Tolkien missed his calling as a satirist of contemporary British suburban and semi-rural society in almost every single non-scouring scene set in the Shire proper.
