USDS became DOGE, which Trump & Musk have claimed is run by Musk, and yet the Trump admin has scrupulously avoided identifying the USDS administrator or what Musk's role actually is.

There's no rational reason for this shell game apart from extensive illegal activity.

There is the USDS, which may stand for the United States DOGE Service, but American journalism uses acronyms in its reporting so I presume we would never see that phrase.

Any major media outlet referring to the USDS as DOGE is inexplicably running ads for a Musk meme.

UPDATE: In the @crew.bsky.social DOGE FOIA lawsuit (a triple acronym gets you bonus points), Judge Cooper is ordering the government to process 1,000 pages a month — although they do not yet need to be produced to CREW. That would follow the court's ruling on summary judgment, if against DOGE.
MINUTE ORDER: The Court has reviewed 30 and 33 the parties' joint status reports concerning production of OMB and USDS records, respectively. The Court hereby directs both OMB and USDS to process the records responsive to CREW's requests at a rate of 1000 pages per month. Although the 24 A government's motion for summary judgment remains pending, the Court already held that USDS is likely subject to FOIA. ... Thus, the Court ordered USDS to begin processing records because "if USDS does not even begin processing the request until after the question of whether it is subject to FOIA is litigated on the merits, a decision in CREW's favor will likely be followed by additional processing delays." ... In accordance with that holding, USDS, along with OMB, must begin processing responsive records now. The Court will not order USDS to produce any documents to CREW until after the Court rules on USDS's motion for summary judgment, however. Turning to the appropriate processing rate, although the government is correct that "a production rate of 500 pages per month has been approved" in routine cases in this district, Middle E. F. v. U.S. Dep't of Homeland Sec., 297 F. Supp. 3d 183, 187 (D.D.C. 2018), this is not such a case. ... a somewhat higher processing rate of 1000 pages per month is appropriate for records responsive to both the OMB and USDS Requests. (In his order, Judge Cooper noted that parts of a declaration submitted by Gleason appear to be "called into question by contradictory evidence..")
"Rule 30(b)(6) requires an organization to identify a person knowledgeable on a noticed topic and to prepare that person to testify as to that topic, thus binding the entity." Prasad v. George Washington Univ., 325 F.R.D. 1, 6 (D.D.C. 2018). If USDS desires, of course, it may select USDS Administrator Amy Gleason as its Rule 30(b)(6) representative. If USDS does not select Administrator Gleason as its Rule 30(b)(6) representative, however, a deposition of Ms. Gleason is additionally appropriate. USDS first submitted a declaration from Ms. Gleason in support of its motion for reconsideration, which detailed her knowledge of USDS's structure and operations. Mot. for Recons., Gleason Decl. Moreover, USDS's motion for summary judgment largely relies on a second declaration from Ms. Gleason on the same topic. Mot. for Summ. J., Attachment 2 (Gleason Decl.). Given that Ms. Gleason's declaration is the only factual evidence offered in support of USDS's summary judgment motion, CREW is naturally entitled to question her. That determination is consistent with the Court's prior observation that parts of Gleason's declaration appear to be "called into question by contradictory evidence in the record." Op. The US Digital Service and 18F were founded a decade ago, and represented the most visible manifestation of civic tech in government. DOGE represents the end of an era, and what is looking like an incredibly dark turn in the role of tech in government.
If the founding of 18F and USDS felt like the beginning of one era for technology in government, the current moment feels like the end of that era. DOGE represents a new era. There are sharp contrasts in philosophy and role. While USDS and 18F focused on improving services for the public, DOGE focuses on cutting services. USDS and 18F staff took a cross-government approach, but did not ride roughshod over agency staff, or create extraordinary security risks as DOGE has. USDS and 18F were never accused of trying to centralize all government data, or ignoring court orders.
