If you've been told you can't donate blood because of the vCJD risk from having spent more than 6 months in the UK, France, or Ireland since 1980, that restriction is entirely lifted. (There are still some restrictions for people who've received hGH.)

i once watched a documentary that had footage of one of the young women who contracted vCJD from the tainted beef in the UK and i cannot say how much that has stuck with me. i think about it a lot. i think about how it could have been prevented if people were worried abt it crossing species barriers

I wrote a short horror, borderline just infodumps around serious scientific research. A plausible pandemic caused by a designer flu virus, optimised for prion formation and therefore vCJD. No cure, no survival, just immobile, silent, uncaring death in the billions.

Did my Master of Health Ed thesis paper on this in 2008. vCJD is basically mad cows' disease in humans caused by ingesting prion infected beef. Studies were showing a cross to deer Chronic Wasting Disease beginning in some areas in Minnesota back then.

Ironically the vCJD risk from those burgers was probably way lower than the risk of getting something nasty from US food right now.
