I was real close to making a Valeyard deck, because who doesn't love democracy 🫡

To be fair, in "Trial of a Timelord" the footage had been manipulated by the Valeyard to make the Doctor appear more unfavourable, so who knows what "the truth" was?

Still think they should have done what Nicola Bryant wanted and killed her off at the end of Mindwarp.

Oh its just made up by me. The Valeyard is from the Trial of the Doctor from the Colin Baker era, that's it. He was trying to sue the doctor for his future regenerations.

For a few crates of VODKA, him sometimes gets FOURTH DOCTOR and THE VALEYARD to act out BONEY M’s greatest hit…

For this month's OUTSIDE THE BLUE BOX, I bring you my thoughts on the bizarre 1974 English proto-slasher CRAZE, featuring Michael Jayston (a.k.a. the Valeyard). Also, Oscar-winner Jack Palance. Huh.

If the New Doctor resists (duh, of course they resist) they cease to exist, denying the Valeyard.

But, upon them "finishing the cycle", they are reborn-
Regenerated wholecloth by the Universe itself as a sort of antibody, with the only directive to "Be good, Have Fun".

The New Doctor then has to decide if they will let themselves become the kind of person that would let themselves be controlled or collaborate with a openly hostile UNIT.

The twist?
The Valeyard is BACK and forcefully taking the ND's remaining incarnations. No silly trial. No arguing.

I remember people on RADW talking about Virgin's guidelines for the New Adventures novels, and #1 was "NO VALEYARD!".

Just like how Pocket's #1 rule for Star Trek novels was "No Pon Farr for Spock".
"When a Doctor goes wrong, he is the first of criminals"

See also Turlough, but substitute actively immoral for insufferable

Also also: we were promised a third Black Guardian arc! I realize it's a deep Who-nerd thing like the Rani or the Valeyard that will never actually come back... but we were PROMISED!

if i was the bbc i would just straight up ask every potential producer if you know what the valeyard is and if they say yes you are instantly disqualified
September 17, 2026 at 9:18 PM
love the BBC saying they wanna avoid direct continuity in their tender form, it's gonna be like the VNAs having a policy of not acknowledging the Valeyard but for the Doctor's immediate previous incarnation

This was an interesting listen from @toohot4tv.bsky.social, but mostly confirmed my few that the Valeyard is maybe an interesting concept, but not actually a very interesting character.

Also, Dylan's plot summary of Trial of the Valeyard had be chuckling in great amusement at how wanky it sounded!
Too Hot For TV continues to celebrate 40 years of Trial of a Timelord, as I am joined by @markraw.bsky.social to look at two Valeyard stories. Trial of the Valeyard by Alan Barnes and Mike Maddox and Bernice Summerfield: Every Dark Thought.

I'm clearly out of touch with Big Finish, I thought the Valeyard only appeared in 'He Jests at Scars' (which I own).
September 14, 2026 at 11:01 PM
Yeah we just need the Valeyard involved on this Vortex Manipulator Timely Wimely Clusterfuck
September 14, 2026 at 2:54 PM
I have a standing view that anything tackling The Valeyard is probably a stupid idea... so I'll be very interested to listen to this ep and see if that's the care!

What is the ValeYard?

Shady bunch...

The Ultimate Foe - Ainley having great fun, the final showdown being a bit of technobabble courtesy of Pip n Jane. Still love it, shame they avoided the Valeyard like the plague after and Big Finish mostly squandered him.
September 7, 2026 at 12:50 AM
The Mysterious Planet - Colin and Nicola playing against the material to make them a more amicable duo works like a charm. Jayston is fantastic as The Valeyard. Still a cracking story.

Celebrated 40 years of Casualty today by watching the first ever episode “Gas”.

And then commemorated 40 years of Part 1 of Doctor Who: Trial of a Time Lord by watching that.

I’m going to do one TOATL episode every week over 14 weeks to replicate the 1986 experience! #Nerdyaf

OTD 1986: The Trial of a Time Lord
40 years of Doctor Who’s longest(ish) story
Starring / sparring superb Michael Jayston vs Colin Baker
Featuring The Mysterious Planet:
The Earth – or is it?
In ruins – or is it?
A robot existential crisis
And, as Tina Turner – Joan Sims!

It fumbles in the end but it doesn't take away from how much fun I have with a good 80% of it. Come Vervoids the arc can feel superfluous but there's a lot of intrigue (the censorship, the Valeyard and the potential unreliability of the matrix) and it works thematically with this Doctor really well.
